Welcome to the Creature Forge, the CGHUB 2D challenge of illustrating creatures of all shapes and sizes!

Creature #69 :: Royal Scythe

Deadline: Jan 31st 2013 11:59pm [PST]

Challenge Overview:
Royal Scythe got it's name from its extremely colorful appearance, combined with it's very long, smooth, single color beak. Most of its time, they hibernate under the sun showing off their diverse colors. If they are not being lazy, they are picking for critters/bugs, hidden in cracks of their surroundings.

Sum of physical attributes:
- one long beak that is a single color
- rest of body is very colorful, very elegant and pretty to look at
- any amount of limbs
- very small eyes / any number
- all other attributes are open for interpretation

Final Delivery:
One image of your creature with a background. The creature should be shown in either the picking pose, or the displaying of its colors.

Super cool jam! I ll probably post my first wips tonight

EDIT: First Sketch. Mainly playing around with colors and thinking about the species. I want to use a totaly diferent composition at the end. The beak is supposed to remind people to a scythe where as the royality of the bird is supposed to be expressed by the corwn like head feathers as well as the color blue which used to be a fairly valuable color in europe. I have thought about using a red tone. I decieded against it hwo ever because I want to avoid resemblance with a phoenix.

Thanks Ogi-G. You are of course absolutely right. This is a new concept. I think it is more original, I am still not fully satisfied with it. Thanks for the feedback

            Default Royal Scythe

Hi, i'm new here, can i join up?
i did some sketches on the royal scythe and end up with these
Can i have your opinions on them?

This one is some kind of dinosaur-based with feather.

This one use his peck to catch food in water, in seem too normal then i add up 2 pair of wings, more "royal" too.

This one just nonsense, i just want to draw a horse-based one, But anyway his dumb look made me laugh a lot.

Hi everyone. Here's my first sketch. I thought it would be nice to have the royal scythe be a large creature.

@ dothaithanh Looks like you're off to a good start. Just have to keep refining the forms.

              Nice entries!

I've decided to go with a bird since I've wanted to paint one for a while now! Going for something like a Gryphon, royal blue coloured with a crown shaped head.

              Hey Everyone,

              Great work so far!

What I've posted here is the reference sheet I composed and the initial gray scale sketch I created for the creature. As you can probably see from my ref sheet the Scythe has the general posture and anatomy of various flightless birds. I've taken inspiration from hadrosaurs to flesh out the shape of its head, and the sail from an odd therapod called Concavenator to figure out the structure of the fin on its back.

The creature was one of the few and rare instances where the visual component of the of the design was very clear my mind before I began to sketch, for which I'm thankful. There are still a lot of things to figure out. I wouldn't really say that my creature is elegant so I'm going to need to find out a way to get that across. Also I want to flesh out the anatomy of his beak a bit more by pulling from a few different insects. I also want to do a few variations on his head to see if i can find a more interesting crest shape.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts so feel free to comment

              Hope to post more soon,

              Thanks

                Default Octiscythe

So this will be my first participation in one of these, hopefully I do everything correctly. Here's my sketch.

I'm thinking mine might live in the shallows of a bay.
