Default BioWare CGHUB 2012 3D Challenge - Dragon Age - larkbeef

Why not join in on this sweet contest, being a fan of both ME and DA, it makes perfect sense!

After doodling and thinking hard for a couple of days, I’ve decided to do a character for the DA universe. Been doing a lot of Sci-Fi this year, so it’s a welcome break.

This is barely even a synopsis, but what I’ve got so far:

    Insert name here
    NPC/small faction
    Bounty hunter

Mr. Owl here is/was part of an cult of Owl-worshipping fanatics, using magics and rituals to transform their bodies into the likeness of the Owl; The Night Hunter.

This character is just about as transformed as any follower ever gets, sharing more traits with The Owl than with humans. Character is going to be designed around hunting. Perhaps patiently perching on a branch in some tree, waiting for nightfall when huge owl eyes are quite beneficial, and then proceed to kill or disable the bounty from afar with an expertly placed bolt.

Concept is somewhat sparse and from ¾-ish. We’ll see where this ends up once I get into 3D.

    Cheers and have fun all!

So, I've spent some evenings blocking out all the different meshes I want, before going into sculpting. I think only minor stuff is left, and that should be easier to add in Zbrush.
I'm quite dreading all that down and feathers.

Also haven't decided if I'm going to go for game model or sculpt only yet. We'll see.

            Colors are final! ;P

            Ciao!

              Hellos!

This is what I've been up to last couple of days.

Sculpting in Zbrush. Started with the lower parts to get in to the swing of things.

Going to start blocking out the wings/cloak next, haven't decided if they are actual wings yet.
              Maybe wings but not functional.

Also somewhat uncertain about what to do with that metal thing on the stomach.

              Until next time!

                Moving slowly, but forwards.

                  Latest update:

Wings are, as suspected, proving most troublesome. Otherwise, slow and steady.

A lot of VERY high quality entries in the forum. Highly entertaining!

                  Cheers.

So just moved to Montreal, but I've managed to squeeze in some hours on this guy:

                      Some more sculpting and polypainting.
It's a bit muted now, which is good for stealthy stuff. Sans the gold and sparkly parts, which would probably be a give away.
Let's say that displaying all your wealth is a sign of prowess or something.

Now fiddling some more and then it's retopo-time.

                      Plus tard!

                        So here's the final dump!
Lack of updates due to no internet since beginning of January (Please, oh please, let me get my connection tomorrow!)

Nothing out of the ordinary; did a retopo, baked the normal map and vertex colors in Xnormal. I used Ndo2 trial for AO, cavity and whatnot, REALLY helpful tool that.
I did a quick CAT-rig in MAX, which animated horribly, but I did an easy pose so tweaking and weighting wasn't that bad.

Lastly I did the crossbow and some bolts, same procedure as the Owlmandude. Exported the mesh with a little tree branch to Marmoset for rendering. Unfortunately I still have Marmoset 1.05 and haven't been able to update to 1.08.

And for some reason as soon as I add an extra light to the scene, everything disappears. So only default skies were available. More than likely some driver issue. Alas no internet.

All in all, I learned some new stuff while making this fellow. Good feels were had.

Good job to all the great characters in the forum, some are very impressive pieces. I'll keep on chasing.

                        Cheers
                        Ted
