Default WIP | Creature Design | Aquatic-like Soldier UPDATE

    Hello guys,

This is my first WIP thread here at CGHub. Like most of the people on this forum, I am looking to improve my skills in design, composition, sketching and final rendering.

This is a first generation sketch. Before I get any tighter with the details and so on, I would like your input so far.

    Please be constructive.

      Hey,
Looks like you're off to a pretty good start but I do see a few issues that are creating some rather large tangents but at this stage are pretty easy to fix. The first one I see is that your creature has some fairly obvious anatomic and proportion issues. Now I'm going to assume that this creature isn't meant to be 100% accurate to the human body but using the same proportions gives your character a more realistic presence. To help, I would first gather a collection of reference images from the human body to aquatic species. In this case I would use a reference image of the human body as a template.
Just to point out some of the issues that stand out to me would be the torso and the shoulders are awkwardly positioned to each other, the toros should be further under the shoulders. Your chest and torso also look as if they are twisted, I would try to match their angle and maybe turn it's head closer towards the camera(towards the viewer). And finally for now I would say his back foot is a little high to me so I would bring it down till it's a little closer to the other to match it's perspective.
Now I'm not sure what direction you want to take this piece but I did a quick paint over of what I would do it this was one of my works.
Hope this helps dude, keep it up dude.
      cheers

        Hi Seavvolf,

Thanks for the input. I really enjoyed the idea of giving more shoulder to the creature, I also moved the hind leg further down. Although not completely adjacent with the front leg as there is the element of perspective to consider.

I also added some additional asymmetric details to make it essier to read the angle of the creatures torso.

Is it good enough for a first gen? I would like to move on to the next phase of the drawing.

I just made a quick correction to one of the shoulders to match the perspective accordingly.

I will post another update later.

Sorry for the delay. Been busy with some other things.

I made some other slight corrections to the original sketch also adding line weights here and there.

Kepp in mind that I am aiming vor a very comic-book style feel to my concepts.

I would like to receive some constructive critics about the following points.

            1 - Overall value & color
Am I using the correct colors? Or should I be using cooler colors? Does my work reqiore more saturation

            2 - Line weights
How can I improve the line weights to appear more affective

            3 - Line Work
Do you think my line work should be cleaner before moving on to values and color?

Remember, for every critic do try to offer a suggestion for me to try out. I am here to learn and I think it's beneficial to all of us to be objective and to the point.

The color looks good but I think you might be jumping ahead to quick, there are still a few issues with your line drawing. one of them still being the thickness of the torso. His torso and his neck are the same thickness. this also makes it look as if his lower half wouldn't support his upper half even if he doesn't necessary walk on land. And also his upper half and lower half look as if there performing two different actions.
