    Default A Master in Action

This is a photo of my dear friend George Dawnay drawing at my studio yesterday afternoon. He is drawing the same model as in my drawing in the previous post. Now doesn't that makes you want to go draw?

Heya!, sorry for my late response, yes I completely agree with you about the academy's. Well nothing to do about, just have to bite myself through it and get my paper there. And in the mean time, in secrecy I'll post here, whatever the hell I love to paint or draw .

And yes this does make me want to paint from life! but we are not getting those classes any more so I'll have to seduce my wife again to pose for me :P.

Nice paintings again every one .

      Here’s another two:

Wow, Lucong! I love the stylization and your use of line. The squiggles at the joints and the hatching bring the pieces to life. So cool. I'm with what some other people have mentioned before - life drawing in school has always been like, copying what's in front of you. I want to try this stylization thing some time, too.

Wow! I never knew there was ASL in Denver too ^^ That's so cool. And I agree, life drawing gives a whole different world for each different eyes ;D

And here are the life studies I did under Nelson Shanks class at ASL in NY (I hope it's ok if they're paintings). Shanks is probably the best instructor that I ever had. His speed and accuracy...and most of all, the vibrant colors he uses for his figures.

Sorry, these are not the best scans.

Speed painting (oil) Canvas 20x16"- 5 minutes

Speed painting (oil) Canvas 20x16" - 10 minutes

Speed - duo tone (oil) Canvas 20x16" - 20 minutes

The simple rule that I had to follow was to never use curved lines and to make it as simple as possible.

Thanks Grace. I think stylization can be really tricky. On the one hand, I have a certain stylistic vocabulary that I use to "translate" what I see in front of me into lines and shapes. On the other hand, I try to follow what I see in front of me as closely as I can. I try to avoid "copying" the model, at the same time I do not wish to make a complete caricature out of the model either. These drawings of mine are more caricature like, since with them I am more concerned about developing my style to make interesting portraits within a short amount of time. With my paintings I can take the time to work on details and accuracy, and the stylization becomes more subtle.

Hey Syran I wish you luck in seducing your wife. My wife can be a great model but my artistic freedom is somewhat limited when I'm working with her. So I only ask her to model for projects that I know will be flattering to her.

VuscISM - very nice studies indeed. You know how to use light and shadow very effectively, and your brush strokes are simple and elegant. I am excited to see more of your work.

Yeah, I really noticed the differences in your paintings with the much more detailed rendering and complete change of tone, but all the models have a lot of individual character. I really like seeing different stages and variety in peoples' work.

                      Default Drawing from 9/16/2008

My favorite dude model Tim (from the painting Timmy) came to model for us on Tuesday. This guy looks like he is straight out of a Egon Schiele drawing.

Pencil on paper, 8.5 inches by 11 inches, from life drawing session at Paris Hotel Studio, September 16th, 2008.

                      amazing work so far, guys!

Lucong; I giggled at the picture -- mostly because I'm a girl who's up too early and saw an unexpected willy hanging out. Also the fact that his name is Tim, which is my best friend's name...so I got a mental image I didn't want LOL.

Gorgeous linework, it's so clean and crisp. Question, do you raise your pen from the paper? seems like a lot of lines are contiguous, except for the hatching here and there. I find it to be such an amazing style yet so hard to achieve.

Elloi, I think continuous lines in the right places are more interesting than interrupted ones, and I try not to use cross hatching because in my opinion it is used too much in line drawings. However I can only speak for my own taste, and I have seen amazing works that are done the way exactly opposite of what I have just said.

Btw, Tim is a great guy, ladies giggle alot when they are around him.

Now that I look at it closer, it looks like cross hatching but in reality it isn't.
even greater linework! very controlled yet free and clean. <3

lol I'm glad I wasn't the only one giggling, then!

Lucong, I like the way your sketches have that look as if the outline is all just one continuous line. That, in my view, is what makes them look so admirable. I want to try doing this sometime with one of my life sketches and see how it turns out. xP hehe, let's see if I can get away with that!
