Default Creature Forge #63 - The Bloop

Welcome to the Creature Forge, the CGHUB 2D challenge of illustrating creatures of all shapes and sizes!

Creature #63 :: The Bloop

Deadline: Saturday, Oct. 13th 2012 11:59pm [PST]

Challenge Overview:
In the summer of 1997, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration picked up a sound from deep beneath the Pacific - "The Bloop". It was recorded from a point about 1,500 miles west of the southern Chilean coast. It was powerful enough to be picked up on sensors located up to 3,000 miles away, making it one of the most powerful noises ever recorded underwater. The sound lasted for just over a minute and has not been detected since. The profile of the sound closely matches that of an animal and if this was the case than this animal is larger than any other known organism.

Final Delivery:
We'd like you to depict the creature responsible for making "The Bloop". How and why the creature made the noise is up to you - We just want to see this leviathan!

The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per say, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.” --Mike Corriero

I went through 3 ideas and I think I am going to land on the third. It is kind of a Cthulhu type crustacean that migrates across the bottom of the ocean and breeds in the Bermuda Triangle

              Hi everyone!

Here's my first WIP. I was going for a more traditional massive whale creature at first, but found it boring and redesigned it. Well it's still a massive whale creature, but more interesting I think. I'm trying to achieve a moody and scary atmosphere while still putting some thought and cool details into the creature. I find underwater creatures more challenging than surface ones since there is so much ambience going on everywhere and the light acts a bit differently. Though I think it also makes things easier in its own way since you can just smudge things and it usually looks OK.

Sweet topic! Here's my bloop creature. The concept is the stingray like creature makes the "bloop" noise when its wing things are moving, the holes make the noise i guess. I layed down a basic sketch and blocked in the background.

                "Captain!?"
                "Yes! What's your problem?"
                "I request an emergency ref-surface!!"
                "Yeah? Why's that!?"
                "I just $#@! MYSELF!!!!"

                some quick dialogue for fun...
need to bounce back on that horse, since I like doing deep sea beasties, this should help me get the ball rolling...
really rough sketch, atm lots of issues with the creatures body proportions, plus there will be changes to the comnposition as well...looking forward to what everyone comes up with for this one...

                  Default Armored creature

Hi, I'm Andy this is my first entry.
A very depht creature should resist at a very high pressure, so my concept has an armored head an an exoskeleton on the rest of the body. For the difficult to find food at that depht, it has tboth long sharp teeth and whale teeth for eating plancton. Maybe it has not eyes but thermal sensor. This is just a initial pencil sketch. I have to refine digitally.
                  Comments and critiques are welcome.
