Default Creature Forge #62 - The Nectar Creeper

Name: cf62.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 355.6 KB

Welcome to the Creature Forge, the CGHUB 2D challenge of illustrating creatures of all shapes and sizes!

Creature #62 :: Nectar Creeper

Deadline: Friday, Sep. 14th 2012 11:59pm [PST]

Challenge Overview:
This round is open for interpretation: This smallish organism is highly adapted to eating nectar from the barbed flowers of the opei bush found in its lush habitat. It's modified mouth and fore-limbs are perfect for avoiding the dangerous barbs of the opei flower to reach the nutritious nectar inside.

Final Delivery:
We'd like you to depict the Nectar Creeper, along with the opei flower it their natural habitat.

“Please don't keep everything secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per say, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.” --Mike Corriero

    Default nectar creeper molusc

    Shortdescription :
Using bodyweight to open the flower,
the bodyform resembling the leafs as camo,
the slime helps to neutralize the toxic micro-thorns
unusually successfull at the opaiflower for a mollusc creature.

First I made this quick sketch but I was not happy yet.

Then I realized that I needed to do some studies before the final concept.

I still don't know where I'm going, but I'll find my way till the end of the week

Good stuff thus far. Interesting to see all the directions it can go with such a vague description. The mollusc is jokes. Crazy form description. Something I need practice with.

Any pointers for getting more texture into your digital works?

This is what I think I'll go for, it pierce the nectar bulb of the flower to drink the nectar.

                      Default Nectar Creeper

Just a quick description that I hadn't included before!
This little guy uses his spindley legs to lightly perch and hold on to the poisonous barbs of the flower. He then can pull some of the barbs aside with his front legs to reach the nectar at the base of the flower. He and this flower are symbiotic, as the little hairs on his arms and body are perfect for pollen distribution. Since he lives on nectar and sometimes insects, he can have quite high energy escapes, springing with his back legs like a grasshopper if his color camouflage doesn't work out!
