    Default Looking for advice/review.

    Hello,

For the past year or so I've been trying to break into the gaming/film industry with little luck. Starting to feel like I'm banging my head against a wall, haha. I wanted to see if this post would pull some replies from people in the Industry with experience that would be willing to lend a few tips and advice.

Also click on the monster to check out some more recent work! I haven't put it on my main website but it should be there.

I'm on a fair amount of sites when it comes to that. Most of the freelancing sites are so inundated with artist it's pretty difficult to even land a job off of them. I could be wrong on this front and might just be going around it wrong but this is what my experience has taught me.

Now I just contact people directly through posts or their websites that indicates they are looking for contract work.

I guess to rephrase this, I'm looking for contacts that are already working in the Industry I could use to get a different perspective from. Nothing over bearing like a job, but some helpful tips as of who would be a good source to get in contact with. I hope this doesn't come off like I'm looking for a hand out, haha, just a little help.

Thank you though for the response! I'll keep pugging away at some of the freelance gigs I'm landing.

Hey Wintermute, I think you could do well by finding some artists here on cghub and messaging them directly. I mean, i dont have a job in the industry yet either, but I've come close (haha) by getting in touch with art directors and artists at studios. Just ask if they have any advice and thank them for their time. Good Luck!

Have you get any job in gaming or film industry before? I think your works are good enough, maybe you could start from actual job which can help to get some work experience.
            Good luck.

            Things i've noticted -

Your portfolio is too big - art directors do not have much time to look through so much stuff. Pick your best perhaps 16 pieces and put them together. You can always add a link to 'more of my work' where the rest of it is so they can see more if they want.

Aside from the logo's your style is much more 'children's story book' I dont mean that in a bad way but if you look at the top people in concept art and gaming they have a particular style which tends to be more digital (Noah Bradley or Sparth) or quite chunky (Blizzard/WoTC)

              Thanks for the input guys!

I'll definitely look into finding other artist on here and contact them about some of the questions I have.

Kovah - you do have a point with the amount of work on my website, I've heard both sides of that and It's either too much or too little. Then you're running into that same wall, yes, art directors only spend a limited amount of time on each site and you need to make it shine. I'm still going through the motions of gearing my site but that is something that I should focus on now.

As for the children's book style, it's hard to get away from that aspect when it's in watercolor. Then again that's actually what got me a gig with Eidos Montreal. Lately though I've really been trying to push my digital work/skill which I have a little of on my site. Any feed back on those would be great! Thanks for the run down, there is always room for improvement.

I'm actually moving to Los Angeles in the next two weeks to pursue this profession more seriously. As well as take a few classes at Gnomon.

Thanks for the comments. I'll definitely look into finding some artist in the same field I wan't to work in on here.

I have already worked in the industry but nothing long term and that's really what I'm complaining about. It' seams like you have to know someone already involved before you can actually make any head way.

Kovah - Your points are pretty dead on, I've been on the same debate with my site for a while but have heard different things. Such as it's too big or doesn't have enough diversity, lucky this is something I can rectifie pretty quick.

My style of watercolor does look pretty children's bookish, but that's also what landed me a gig at Eidos Montreal. I'm not trying to compete with the big names you mentioned. One day yes, but as of right now I'm just trying to make it into the scene.

I'm actually moving to Los Angeles in two weeks to take this whole venture more serious. As well as take some classes at Gnomon to get my chops up and meet others with like minded ideas.
