Default 3D Creature Planets #20: Beautiful Grotesque!

Challenge begins 12:00 am MONDAY 20th August

This months challenge, Beautiful Grotesque!

This months challenge is to take the human body and turn it into a beautiful grotesque form.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as an artist we find beauty, curiosity and intrigue in nature in all its forms.

Artist like Leonardo was fascinated by Grotesque figures, which filled his sketch book. Modern artist Patricia Piccinini also takes the grotesque form as inspiration for her sculptures. H.R. Giger also uses and twists the human forms in his works.

As digital sculptors we often are called upon to create creatures which are grotesque and macabre, they may not be in an art gallery, but never the less - they are still works of art, made by a creative energy.

You can focus on a particular body part, bust or a full body, keeping it identifiable as a human form.

Heres a quote from Leonardo's biography -
Quote:
Grotesque faces particularly fascinated him: his renditions of them are not caricatures, as they express no irony: they are beauty's obverse, equally worthy of attention and definition.

Rules and guidelines:

odd or unnatural in shape, appearance, or character; fantastically ugly or absurd; bizarre.

Fantastic in the shaping and combination of forms.

Also it's a creature Planets stuff, so stick to the topic and any images of violence towards another human, animal will not be accepted! So beware! Keep it tasteful!

Must be identifiable as part of a human form

At least one concept and one work in progress image in the challenge thread

~ Front, 3/4 and close up shots in greyscale
~ Posed and textured beauty shot (grey scale or color)

Here's some referene together with a (very) rough sketch:

And today i started to sculpt. I intend to apply some drama and an slight beauty on those eyes, and the "ugly" part concetrate on the jaws
              there's the WIP:

                Nice start, Cebola.

I really liked Travis Louie's work, the weird faces with the costumes on. Is it okay if my entry looks like a tribute to his work? I really want to capture the feeling that his work gives me. I have done many sketches, here's the one I prefer the most for now.

There are no restrictions on using your own design or someone elses, as long as credit and permission are given of course.

Designing your own is always more fun though right?

@Cebola good start, one of the big thing / theme to consider for your concept would be how the jaw bone connects to the head. It will bring the out the character, along with the eyes you mentioned. Is the jaw bone normal sized or deformed elongated one? personally I would go for a human sized one and try to play with how the muscles and tendons are holding it in place. maybe do a few speed sculpt versions?

@stonestef great concept, lots of character in it already, can't wait to see it fleshed out.

whoa, slow down there. the challenge just started. the point of these challenges are to post your wips and get critics.

as per the brief, you are required to post at least one concept and one wip. This is so people arent tempted to recycle their old works and also challenges them to respond to crits.

What I have so far. Inspired by rubber johnny, but I'll try to make it more original for the final.
