Hey guys,

Based on the feedback I came up with some new thumbnails. Hopefully I can narrow these down and proceed on the actual piece!

@Alextle - Thanks for the feedback! Depending on which one of the new thumbnails I choose, I may be able to mix in the entire body but retains omething more dynamic.

@Tyno - Thanks for the paint over, it helped a lot. I still like C the best, but the addition of the children is a very good one. Why not have it leading a couple through the tunnel? Maybe merge up B and C? I like the anatomical changes made as well.

@GDG - Monster hunter is an amazing game. They have a great art book out on amazon called Monster Hunter Illustrated (or something). I have it, very sweet book. I like the direction you're going in. The ant base is a good choice.

@Docslav - I am liking your design so far too. For some reason it makes me think of Starship Troopers. I really dig bug-like designs.

    As of right now, I'm tempted to go with C. but crits and comments are much appreciated!

    @ docslave
    awesome design, I like the many legs! The new pose is definitely better. I'm looking forward to the update

    @ amadarien
    Cool design and I love your use of bright colors! I would go with the bottom right one, the tension in that thumb is great while at the same time gives a good view of the design!

    @ GDG
    I have a bit of a hard time seeing what exactly goes on in the thumbs, but I would say illustrating how your creature digs around in the volcanoes would give the most relevant information regarding the topic of the challenge looking forward to the update.

    @ tyno
    Its nice to see your process and thoughts about the design. You've solved a lot of your problems regarding anatomy! As for your thumbs I like the comp in C the best

    Thanks all!
    I'm actually going to try and "illustrate" this guy, rather than "concept paint" it, so it'll be quite stylized I think. I'm working on the cleanup lines now.

    @Docslav:
    The newer concept works better, I love the narrative it brings out. A greedy tunneler sneaks off to eat some hard earned lava on his own. Haha. With the mouth being bright white, it's basically a "punch you in the face" focal point.

    @Amadarien:
    Bottom left looks like they're playing, which in itself is a neat idea. these gigantic creatures cause massive destruction while "having fun". The pose on the top left, is the most appealing, in my opinion.

    @Andreasbech:
    "C" hands down. He just looks efficient. The angle you have him at shows off the claws nicely. I might even need to make the forearms on my concept larger.

    @GDG:
    I agree that the thumbs are hard for me to decipher, but the colour scheme is effective. I would say that you should careful of just making "an ant" though, give us an improvement on the species specific to volcanic breeds.

    @Massgard:
    Model one! You don't need a challenge! Although, it would be an awesome end of the year 3D challenge to rummage through the 2D sections of CGhub and build out one of the concepts. You're free to model my concept

      @amadarien the pose in the bottom right thumb is really effective, not sure about the foreground creature though. I noticed some of them only have 4 legs, it was a 6-legged creature to start with right?

      it's just "Docslav" btw, no e at the end. I'll have an update soon.

      @docslav I haven't decided yet, lol. I am toying with 4 and 6. Not sure which I like more at this point.

          @Scorge - Absolutely loving the concept you have going on here, as well as the composition. Love it!

          @Unseenhand - Welcome aboard! I am pretty new to these challenges myself, but hopefully I can give you a hand. The woodpecker idea is the right kind of out-of-the-box thinking. Things to keep in mind when doing character/creature design is how they live in their environment and how they're adapted to it.

          Does the woodpecker live outside the volcano? If so, does it create small tunnels to capture prey? If that's the case, how big is the creature? To plow through stone, it would need a strong beak. It would need to be resistant to heat as well. Maybe it's eyes would develope a sort of nicatating membrane to shield it's eyes from the heat.

          The theme is a volcanic tunneler, so t hat's the most important thing to keep in mind. It's a creature that tunnels through a volcano. A flying creature, to fit this theme, would have to have a need to tunnel in a volcano. Reasons could range from going for food, to perhaps it hatches it's eggs in tunnels it creates (the heat being the draw to leaving it's eggs t here).

          Hopefully this helps in getting into the mindset! I am pretty new too, so take it with a grain of salt.

            Looking good everyone! I hope to.get something in on this one. Its just too good to pass up. My initial idea (thumbs to come soon) is an animal that has a corkscrew shaped spine with limbs at every 33 degrees or so to drive itself in a rapid spiral allowing the cranial plating to shear through the heat softened stone of the volcano

              Was trying out some less common colors for lava but ended up with orange anyway

              here's one of the earlier color schemes

                  This is what I have so far. I have agree with scorge about it being tough, since the environment is dark and the only light source is magma or coming from your creature.
