I had no plans for joining this challenge but then I realized that I'm already doing a related project, so I've picked a part of it (the shield) and develop in detail for this.
My shield belongs to a Knight called Birdy, who is a cartoony knight girl with the soul of a bird. She is small and vivid, and she moves very fast like a hummingbird but is dangerous like a hawk. Now I'm designed the whole character in order to model it in 3D. With my sketches you can see a thumbnail of she and her color scheme.
My first attempt with the shield was trying to do something girly and winged, but finally it becomes a little bit "Sailor Moon" and, I don't why, but it remembers me to one of those mexican virgins (I think is the color scheme indeed). But well, I like it and I will try to subtle the palette.
I really appreciate any kind of comments and critics, because I feel really nervous when designing and this is a big project for me (I want it to be part of my character designer portfolio). So, go on and leave a comment!
@htkpeh Architecture is a great inspiration! If I where you, I will exaggerate a little bit the elephant shape, because it is very unusual and exotic, but I can barely see it now. Your textures are awesome.
@Sorknes Your design is good but color scheme is definitely not working. Try Kuler or ColorScheme. Color is very important!
@Eludor Wow! You are a design machine! Oh man, I really love the 6 to 10 of the last ones, especially because it is quite similar to what I am doing.
PS: I'm so so so sorry for my English. I'm sure I've made a lot of mistakes in the post, but forgive me, I am learning (Feel free to correct me, I really appreciate it, believe me)
PD: Sorry for my bad English! Feel free to correct me so I could improve.

@MarioManzanares – I think it looks good man, I know it’s a WIP, but I can’t wait to see more detail in the centerpiece. It already look like a dragon head or something like that. Don’t worry about bad English, I only speak one language and I probably do it horribly lol.
@Eludor – I like all your silhouettes lol, my favs though are 3 and 5 (I like the dagger like shape, very aggressive) and 16 though 20 because its just a cool shape lol.
@htkpeh – I agree with others who miss the elephant in your newer designs. I can still see where there are some of the lines, but they no longer read to me as ‘elephant.’ Your rendering is awesome though man, my favorite is probably the antique looking one on the top right. The pencil is a good idea, but I think you might be trying to shove too much detail into the top of the shield.
@Sorknes – The thistle idea is great. I like it a lot. What I think would make this piece much stronger is the simplifying of the color scheme. Pick a highly saturated color for the thistle flower (purple could work ok) but make sure to add some small similarly colored gems around the shield to help with repetition. Repetition helps unify the piece so the color doesn’t seem out of place (don’t do too much though lol). Use your second color for a light and slightly dull background. Maybe a worn looking green would work. Finally, choose a metal (silver/gold/gunmetal) for all of your thistle/filigree. I am speaking mainly about your image on the right since it’s my favorite. I’m not sure if you need the horns or not, but those could be a cool bone like substance. Phew, sorry got carried away there. Totally just suggestions of what I would do, so please take it for a grain of salt.
Great entries guys love the work!

hey Eludor, nice to see you here.
i mostly like the number 10 in yours first picture, the 6 and 9 in your third picture and the 8 in the last one
the technic you are using for finding your form is great
welcome MarioManzanares and you have some really cool designs, keep on with that
@Lotsaluvin: i try to bring in so much detail in some areas cause it should look like a overwelming, king´s style, old oriental shield,if i find a way to balance it with one or two big less-detailed ares it should work, have to try
@Sorknes:much better,i like it
@ jeanmoore: i´m really interested in yours cause of the references you are using, keep on
if somebody has problems finding a cool shape or how to use thumbnails like eludor i can highly recommend this side
and especially this video
so here are my next step, try to push the design i choose, the top ones are my favorites

@MarioManzanares: Nah, I'm not a design machine at all It just looks great if you post an overwhelming mass. It does not tell you how long it took me, what i thought, or even if i thought at all :P. You had some cool looking stuff going on there. to be honest I'm a bit disappointed you picked a sillhouette that's almost common. you know, the arrowhead/heart style. On the other hand, I believe the most simple designs are the best. The inside forms are great though.
In your last post, i believe you can push the materials a bit more. More/less specularity.
@Lotsaluvin: Wasn't easy to pick one of them, so many good ones in such a mass, but glad you like those .
@Sorknes: Cool to see, that you're trying further. I like the 9. But I'm not quite sure what you're going after. The first has more of an elephant or warthog, making it a bit like the thing htkpeh is after, but with france decoration, and the second one looks to me like a more common fantasy style with air elements (which i personally like more). your colors look more unified now.
@jeanmoore: I don't believe im working that fast i just posted all at once, making it look like a huge output. Did them in a whole morning. The idea with the corsett is great, have'nt heard of that before. And like 12 you picked, would've been my choice too. The strings you added in the top pic making the cool sillhouette a bit "normal", or in other words not as interesting anymore. Would'nt do too great changes there. But since you want to do something watertribalish you can really work with the materials and some waterforms inside the shield. that'll be great.
@htkpeh: long time no see yah I know, i'm more of an underground typ of guy hehe. You're really doing a great job at detailing your piece, I'm not quite sure if it looks at this stage orantalic too me, but with the right colors there won't be any doubt I'm at this stage not too keen with your sillhouettes. Just paint them comepletely black and reduce their size a bit, and you'll see they could be more interesting. Those top shields have a problem in my eyes - overkill with details, not giving the eyes a moment to rest. making the lower shields a bit more appealing to me. Wanna see you next step go for it!
That's all my opinion, you don't have to listen to me
Just had some couple of hours for my colorvariations :/
But i believe i already know 2 will be my fav from these.
Funny thing is, i don't want to do a bad guys shield, but picked the one with the big spikes .
With some "good" colorsceemes it isn't a big problem, as you can see. Yeah i tried a evil one with 3 and neutral ones with 1 and 5, but the all good one 2 just looks most like the shield im looking for.
Maybe i'll do some more colors if i've got the time.
I already designed a crest for the shield. A crowend snake with wings. At first it was a phenix. The phenix looked more like a snake, so I redrew it many times over, till I got the idea a winged snake isn't such a bad idea and looked up for the aztecan god "Quetzalcoatl" and his symbolism. Guess, it's ok since i'm doing a fantasy and not a medieval shield. Well, now it's the royal snake symboling an everlasting kingdom, which will always rise again if it falls.
for those wo never heard of Quetzalcoatl, the fast wiki:
I'm going for an typical fantasy cartoony look, like warcraft, warhammer, guild wars.
So those are my references for this piece .
After a quick google search theres a lot of stuff, hopefully it'll help you too.
