Hey everyone! I started my study, after countless hours debating what dog breed to use I decided to use the mutt. My mutt to be specific.
This is Elley, my pit bull and Labrador retriever mix. I have three dogs but I choose her because she has such a muscular physique, perfect for this challenge. This is what I have so far, I decided I liked both poses so I went ahead and decided to do both. A little extra work but it's always good to do to learn. |

@dierat: Great start! Siberian Huskies are such beautiful dogs
![]() I'd really like to see you try painting your entry with it¡s mouth opened, just like in your reference ![]() @mayanew: Glad to have you participating, mayanew! Do you have any pictures of the dogs you grew up with? It'd be awesome if you could upload the pictures, if you have them, and use them as reference ![]() @TwoDD: Lindsey, your dog is gorgeous! I agree, her build is fit to appear on dog food commercials Excellent sketches, your work is awesome as always! Can't wait to see you take it further!@SevnthFloorArt: Welcome back! I'm thrilled with your sketches, they all show such a powerful pose and you seem to have no problems at all at getting the shape / silhouette of the german shorthair (a great pick btw!) Keep up the good work, guys, I'll be participating on this one myself, I'll post my WIPs soon enough! |

Great posts, everyone! I love the sketches.
I love my furbaby, so I've chosen to do her. She's also a pit bull mix of some kind - so her musculature will be interesting. I've started out with a series of sketches of her in both repose and a more action, running types shots. I'll do some anatomy sketches next. Glad to participate in this one! |

So, I'm using the book "An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists" by W. Ellenberger that I had picked up from a thrift store forever ago. However, many of the illustrations are also on the web at high resolution, as I believe the copyright is actually over for this book. It's a great one for animals.
In any case, I did a quick sketch of the skeleton and musculature based off the dogs in that book (mine isn't nearly so... svelte). I'll be looking more closely at the photos of my pooch next. |

I've started to try and lay in the skeleton in one of my dog's more active poses. I'll probably do the same thing for one in 'repose' and go from there. This is a very sketchy skeleton for when she was jumping down the hill. Figuring out the slightly unusual perspective was... interesting. I'm still not sold on any of it, especially the skull.
EDIT 2:YAY. Sketch success. Ta. Last edited by eternalfiresong; 06-22-2012 at 08:43 AM. |

Okay, so I've done a more detailed skeleton sketch with just a bit of color for the jumping pose, and a rough sketch of the muscles that would be most prominent in this position. I think. Again, I'm using the Ellenberger Animal Anatomy book as my main reference.
