Challengers! Hereth lie the rules for this round's challenge! Make sure to read them entirely!

"A Madman's Ramblings (Introduction)"

"Hands on Art"...pun intended, it's terrible, I know and I am sorry, but "Hand Anatomy" sounded dull and boring :P Anyway, I think one of the hardest things I ever learned about life is that drawing hands is veeeery difficult. I still have some harsh time when it comes to hands and feet (we'll get to those also, eventually!) and I know a lot of artist who've had and still have a hard time when it comes to hands.
I, as practical as I believe myself to be, decided that studying the hand was not enough and that a more "applied hand study" would be a better experience for those who crave for a challenge.
So, without further ado...the Objectives!

Objectives

Challengers will be tasked to study the Anatomy of the human hand and to reproduce it in a situation picked by the challenger.

Rules and Requirements

- Challengers are required to show their WIP and Reference Materials. These challenges are an opportunity for all of us to make contact with other artists and be a part of a growing community and it would be unfair for the artists who are making an effort to share their work and ideas if you are allowed to enter the finals without participating in the WIP thread.
- Challengers are to study the anatomy of the human hand and apply their knowledge to a certain situation of their pick.
The options are: Handcuffed hands study, Praying / Meditating hands study, or a study of hands pulling a piece of rope or cloth.
- Only one image is required for the final entry, however, challengers are free to do artwork for the rest of the options. The more the merrier

Some Tips to get you on your way...

- As always, take your time and study the anatomy of hands, you've got a perfect pair of those as reference allready!
- The options to pick from are a great way to explore different emotions and dynamics on something as basic as hands. Handcuffed hands should feel burdened and uncomfortable; praying/meditating hands should reflect peace and calm; the study of hands pulling from the rope or a piece of cloth should reflect the action properly and seem natural.
- Here are a couple reference images:

        Great one!
        My first sketches.
The knowledge mudra and the healing mudra.

"A “mudra” is a hand gesture, just as a “mantra” is a sound and a “mandala” is an image or thought. A mudra is a particular position of your hands that connects the energy channels in your fingers in certain ways, in order to produce a precise and beneficial effect. When the tips of specific fingers touch, this action activates energy relays which, in conjunction with the normal flow of energy through your straightened fingers, produces specific desirable affects in your physical and energetic bodies."

Nope, not for this one. All I require is for everyone to show their reference pictures

Here's my hand anatomy practice. I chose this as my ref picture cause I'm pretty bad at lighting. Anywhere I can find good tutorials/books on lighting & color?

@d13598: Hey, man, great sketch there. However, please do read the rules of the challenge before you continue any further, I'm asking for studies of hands in particular scenarios, the options to choose from are listed on the "rules and requirements" section of the first post. You can do either just one or all of them, but I would really like to see how artists handle anatomy along with some more emotional applications. Sorry for the inconvenience :P

@Amaakir: AHHHH...I'm so sorry. My fault, didn't read carefully. Aright then, I'll pick another ref picture. No problem I need the practice anyways

I have a question, are these supposed to be 1:1 studies of an ref image or is the purpose to recreate based on reference?

It can be any, I highly commend and cheer for those who recreate based on reference, but your studies can be taken directly from the reference image, like any life drawing, just as long as you don't do a direct paint over.

Color and Light by James Gurney is the only book I know on that specific subject (though many art books have a small section covering the basics). Here is a tutorial that I personally have found very helpful : http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm . In the end though, the best way to learn is through observation, preferably from life because photography can't quite capture values or color as seen by the human eye.
