So i'm pretty new to the digital painting scene. I am trying my hardest to get better at it, but I've only used pencil for pretty much my entire life. I desperately want to work on becoming a concept artist and i feel like digital painting is a must in this profession. I started working on my first piece, just to kinda mess around with techniques and figure some stuff out. Opacity is a real problem for me. ive watched so many tutorials on people making amazing master pieces using just colors and opacity, not even a base sketch, and it blows my mind. But anyway, if you all could critique what ive done so far, and give me pointers and tips, any kind of helpful information would be great. Also, what is a good brush to sketch with? ive tried alot of different ones, like soft and hard round opacity, airbrush, soft and hard pressure, etc.. but if there is a specific one that is better for sketching id really like to know.

I think that if you really want to be a concept artist,you just need more patiences to practice your skills.We cannot eat into a fat at one breath.
And your painting has showed out your skills so far.Keep learning,you will become more and more proficient,cheers!

Haai, looking pretty good so far~
The overall positioning and anatomy is good, but I suggest to add more muscle tone around the body (through shading and such) so that the body does not look bulky~

For a first painting, that's way better than i was!

First thing about digital painting is - Keep it simple.

You don't need fancy brushes (Even if the speed paintings you see have them) In fact i use the standard hard edged round for everything i do...

some tips

I'll just assume you have some sort of tablet.

Use the [ and ] keys to change the size of your brush on the fly.

The proper use of the keyboard is: place your pointer finger on the "Alt" button and your Ring finger on the ctrl button. Use your pointer finger to reach for the space bar and reach the "Z" button

z button = zoom
Space + click drag = pan
Alt = colour picker
Ctrl + Alt + del = undo

when you use brush to paint, to practice keep the flow at 100% and set opacity at 60%

Use the Alt to colour pick and blend... just go back and forth over it. Think about what it would look like in 3d.

I recommend using black and white to begin with. I've seen amazing art that was done just in black and white and it's simpler to learn. Every once in a while go wild with colour... but remember that value (Black and white) is what makes things look right.

Its Ctrl + Alt + Z to undo not Ctrl + Alt + del lol

My habit is to keep my fingers always placed on the [ and ] keys because I have a habit of regularly changing the size of my brush while I'm painting.
