Default Just Started 3ds Max: First Project is Donkey Kong

So, I just picked up 3ds Max recently, and ran through a few tutorials to get myself familiar with the tool. I'm going to recreate the model of Donkey Kong that was used for the Donkey Kong Country games. You can find it at this link:

My first step is creating his large mouth. I was wondering how I go about making the inlet that will represent his mouth. I first created a sphere to try to go from there, but so far, aside from removing the points, I've yet to get a clean modification of creating this part of him. Would I be better off creating two halves and joining them after or is there a simpler way of editing a single shape?
