Default My first five months of atelier figure drawing

It's been a few months since I've posted here. I've been busy with a few things. I ended up moving to San Francisco back in August. Since then, I've been attending the evening figure drawing classes at Safehouse atelier. The class is instructed by Carl Dobsky. I just finished my third month with them and I wanted to share what I have so far. This program has provided me with a much needed kick in the ass. Crits are welcome.

Beautiful drawings. Still haven't done a single minute of real life drawing (apart from myself, my kids and wife etc.), really should join a class

Wow, these are amazing! Some of the poses look a little stiff, but you've definitely made a ton of progress since the first month. What's your process like? Do you measure everything out, or is it more freehand?

Thanks. I do a little bit of general and comparative measuring while creating my initial envelope leading up to my block-in. I just use a stick and a plum line to get most reliably sized shapes that I can.

              Default Nice work

You have a very skilled way of shading, its so precise it looks like a computer generated gradient. Anyway it seems like you are understanding anatomy well. Keep it up!

DonnaNoodle: Thanks. Rendering clean value transitions is tough, delicate work and I'm glad I'm making progress. I still have a ways to go.

Here's january's figure drawing. Graphite on Bristol. 24 hours.

Each peice is showing marked progress from the prior! Very very nice work (astounding, actually).

Your technique: strokes only (no smudging)?

Thank you very much. Yes. The transitions and values are all achieved through the pencil stroke.

Here is the figure drawing for the month of May. Graphite on Bristol. Approximately 24 hours.

My other questions, then are: what size are you working on, and I assume the model assumes the exact pose each session (or as near as possible)?
