    Wink Pirate

    Hi all,

This is my first 2d digital paint using Photoshop.

Since this is my first digital artwork I would like to receive critics and comments. (Mainly because I want to get as pro as someartists I´ve seen around the net, that can not only paint well enough but almost create humans)

The refrence was a black and white sketch from a very old italian art magazine called Ritratti.

    Thanks

There are two things bothering me: first the ears seem to be positioned as if his head were not tilted back, but upright. Basically they don't seem to follow the line of his head. Second, the shadows on his neck. Maybe there's some reason for them in the ref image, but here they're kind of weird, and look more like he's got a dirty neck. The criticisms aside, as a first attempt? It's very nice. Good expression.

First off, fabulous job for a first go. He looks full of personality, which is difficult to do for many artists. I'll have to agree with maculate on the neck shadows. Perhaps they are a bit too linear? The ears need to be raised slightly I think to make them more natural to the tilt. LOVE the one droopy eyelid.

Like what has been said before, the ears need looking at and the neck. Take a look at yourself in the mirror to see where we are coming from with the ears. Think about the underlying anatomy of the neck such as the Adam's apple area.

Here are a few key areas to look up which influence the surface and shape of the neck:

        Sternocleidomastoideus

        Hyoid bone

        Thyroid cartilage

        Cricoid cartilage

        Sternal head

        Clavicular head

        Infraclavicular Fossa

        Clavicle

Look them up on Google. It will help yopu create a solid foundation for the structure of the face. Great start though, has loads of character!

          Many thanks for the responses!

I spend more time working with 3d stuff, but I certainly want to upgrade myself and get into digital painting as well.

I´d rather start another project than comming back and fixing the ears and neck. Soon I will be posting a new portrait I am currently working on. This time I will take a closer look at anatomy issues and already got a small mirror near my desk for quick natural references.

Thanks maculate, Victorious, DonnaRyan and Colin-Ashcroft!
