    Default Etchings on Bamboo Leaves

I'll give a worded summary later of my goals as an artist later when there's time.

But it's time for me to at least start being serious.

Want to give particular thanks to Chaz Head and Ben Thompson for providing a sense of . . . peaceful determination.

I guess since I have some time right now to elucidate the purpose of this sketchbook.

I'm hoping that this sketchbook contributes to my goal to start a career as a concept artist/2D artist with some company (games, film, etc) Something I feel is terribly far away since I'm just a sophomore at USC in a non-entertainment design focused major (Interactive Media.)

So . . . after nearly a semester, I have to throw in the towel on the "Deep Blue" group sketchbook idea. I don't think I have enough colleagues at USC (Los Angeles, CA) who are as dedicated as I am to this craft, which is fine for them, but . . . it has been disheartening for me (and I suspect some of them don't understand my fear about me not being, at this moment in time, even remotely competitive as a commercial artist, or the concern they should have for themselves). Wish I had a car to visit the inspirational artists like Edmundo Sanchez (Who, thank God, I was able to interview. He's a super awesome dude) and attend stuff like The Drawing Club independently.

So, no more Deep Blue. It's effectively dead since the other people I invited and had join are not interested in maintaining a focused sketchgroup. Reverting back to this thread for me sketches.

I hope I can commit to this in what feels like a bloody desert at this University. (Not that my non-art friends aren't awesome . . . but it'd be nice to have a sketching buddy or something)

A lot of this is recent, but due to that hiccup with that group sketchbook idea, I got a lot of backlog I should be scanning in and posting later.

                      Skyrim fanart!

Made the dragon sport a hammerhead eye set.

Also posting up two WIP composites, if anyone has the time to analyze what I'm doing wrong or right.

A joke piece I did a while back. Brownie points for anyone can name the movie I used!

and a quick piece inspired by The Humbling River - Puscifier

Hi man. You're definately trying and eager.

One thing that might help push you to improve is to take notes from professional work. Find some of your favourite artists, and collect a few samples of there work.

Make a list that identifies what it is that you like about the work, what really stands out to you as being great.

                            An example might be-

                            The colours, the composition.

So you could better understand what colours were used by taking it into Photoshop, and eyedrop different areas of the image and sample some of the colours to see what they are.

Or if you really like the composition, you could do some checks in Photoshop like the threshold filter, or desaturate to check the value structure.

You will begin to notice things like how the artist might have placed an area of intense colour against a desaturated area to pop it out.

@Camske: Thank you so much for the good words. I'll definitely compile some other work and study them if I ever start another full illustration.

Right now, though, I'm doing a Winter Break self-Maya bootcamp. I'm trying to get ready for one of the Advanced Final Games project thesis groups here at USC on a game called "Tales from the Minus Lab" (searchable in Youtube, has a trailer) So a lot of my sketching and drawing time has been sucked up by me going through the "Introducing Maya 2011" by Derakhshani book. Any of the Maya posted stuff is the stuff I made going through the lessons.

I am working on something illustration wise. We'll see if that comes to fruition.

At the immediate moment right now, I'm weaning myself off the in-book lessons and going to attempt to make my own useable, game asset model a la Torchlight (great small game, with Diablo mechanics). More on that soon.
