Default Drawing Jam #63 :: Soldier Boy

Soldier Boy

Deadline: 14th of November 2011 at noon GMT

Soldier boy.

Every country has some kind of armed forces, most fantasy settings have them too. In England November the 11th is Poppy Day in which paper poppies are bought with the proceeds going to soldiers in need. This jam is dedicated to soldiers, be they modern, historic or fantastical. From modern marines to the knights of old or the Riders of Rohan from Middle Earth. Draw us a soldier.

      Inspired by: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_at_Dawn_Memorial

The actual pose is anachronistic, but I feel it emphasises the dynamics of the situatuation.

Default My First Challenge! Oh, my first digital painting too!

        Hey there everyone!

This is my first challenge since my recent registry to CGHUB. I am extremely excited for this project! I will begin brainstorming immediately!

I have a question to anyone that can help me? I checked the attachment thread and I lowered my image pixels to 900-750 for the width and length. Does anyone know how to reduce the image to where it's under 500. kb? I can't seem to attach my image!

        Hi,
Welcome to the forum and to drawing jams. Make sure you are saving you image as a jpeg or png file and if you scanned it in reduce the dpi to around 100 for posting it here. Which should reduce the file size significantly

Searching for some ideas here's what it came out. Looks to me like some kind of future soldier in high mountain landscape

Great job, Zoppy, looking forward to seeing this finished! I feel the background could need some more elements, maybe add a crashed ship or something?
              Cheers!

Thank you for the compliments! And I completely agree with you about adding some element, infact I was thinking to add some flying ship or even an army appearing behind him.

I created an account to finally do one of these, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time. We'll see what I can muster tonight.

                      Default Soldier Girl? Concept WIP!

My first painting WIP! Let the roller coaster begin! I'm welcoming any
                      critiques and advice!

I was inspired by the dominance of a woman and their equality to
participate as a soldier. My concept is futuristic era during a planet
                      invasion.

First time doing this. I don't feel like I'm close to being as good as any of you guys, but Imma take the shot.

I was thinking about how to do this piece in terms of idea and composition interestingly. Something that wasn't a Great dramatic/static pose, or an action shot of say someone dragging another soldier. I toyed around in my sketchbook, and I settled on the idea of a (sci-fi) soldier getting her morning coffee break interrupted by explosive shells hitting her fox hole.

Hopefully this WIP is conveying that. I'm working with an awkward camera angle, so if anyone can help me with perspective/foreshortening and how to make this overall better, THAT'D BE SUPER AWESOME!
