I think you are having a good start with your studies. I am new to matte paintings, so I can`t give you much advice there. Just keep posting and improving, we will keep an eye on you! : )

i usually work total on 2d for the human figure

instead for the matte paintings i begin in 3d (for study the perspective)
and then i finish the image painting on 2d
