    Default My concepts and matte paintings


    Hello all,

    My name's Adam Kuczek and I'm a freelance concept artist and matte painter from China. I want to use this thread to introduce you to some of my works, mostly environments. Hopefully, you'll find them interesting

    Here's the first part, soon I'll post some more.

      Looks good Adam, very clear and applicable concepts. Make sure you dont lose focus and detail further in the back; I know atmospherics tend to take over but ensure the loose brush strokes dont bleed in too much if you are going for that matte painting look. Looking forward to more of your work.

                  A frame taken from a pretty complex 3D matte of the futuristic city, created as a practice of multi-camera matte projection. The city (over 600k polys) was assembled in 3D, together with 10 projection cameras displaying various pieces of matte in a way that allowed horizontal camera move. Geometry and cameras were imported into Nuke and comped. Additional animations, like smoke and ships, were added on cards and placed accordingly in Nuke's 3D space. The whole sequence, rendered in 2k, ended in After Effects, where the final tweaks were applied.

                          'Butterfly' is my long-term personal project that started as a sf/cyberpunk point-and-click adventure game back in 2009. http://www.hardydev.com/2009/04/15/h...roslaw-kuczek/ - here you can read an actual interview about it and see some old concepts - that's when I started with digital painting Since I don't have any more time for its development, I decided to tell the story in a series of concepts, maybe finalized with a downloadable mini-artbook. We'll see

                          The story, set in Shanghai, in the year 2099, when androids stand for almost 1/3 of the general population. An undercover agent of a major corporation, ZEN Technologies, is sent on a mission to recover a stolen prototype of an AI module. In order to track the thief, he has to lurk into the deepest and oldest areas of megalopolis.

                          Here's the first part.


                          General overview of futuristic Shanghai, where the story takes place. The idea is to mix the old, stone architecture and traditional elements, like gates or monuments, with vast scale and futuristic additions.


                          ZEN troopers are searching through Purgatory - the lowest part of megalopolis, partially beneath the city streets, in order to recover the stolen module. Of course, they fail and the main hero has to be called into service.


                          Some designs for ZEN troopers. Just like with the architecture, the idea was to make them sf with strong Eastern influences visible mostly in the outfits/armor.


                          A couple of heavy weapons, where it's more about functionality and firepower than fancy design. One is actually a modified factory tool. These weapons are in use on image 'Search in progress'.

                            Second part of concepts:


                            It's time for some action! At some point in the story, the main protagonists are busted in their safe house. However, they can handle themselves, mostly due to an efficient machine gun and a couple of electro-magnetic motion-sensor explosives planted around the apartment (in case the opponents have cybernetic enhancements or are pure androids).


                            Sometimes you need a team to help you out, especially when a stolen police battle suit ends up in wrong hands. Its driver, sent after the protagonists, is distracted and engaged by the troopers (image itself in POV of one of them). Hopefully, they get some hazard pay.


                            A closer look at the suit from the previous image and its various parts. As you can see, it's pretty heavy and need some additional boosters for the driver to walk (or even jump) around. As long as they are full, you're good to go, so if you don't want to turn into a fancy monument, watch your energy levels!


                            The main antagonist surrounded, seemingly in a lot of trouble. What the thugs do not know is that their opponent is an android of GEN III with custom battle mode. They are up for one helluva ride.
