    Default Jungle Swamp/Fantasy Village W.I.P.

Hey all here is what I'm working on for my senior class (portfolio 1) I have little wip to really judge but in the coming week I will have more. But I would like to hear from you now if you have anything, trying to get my plants as low as possible while containing the detail (this will be an environment that will be imported into UDK)

I'm really trying to get that Crysis, BFBC2, and Uncharted 2 quality of detail in the dense jungle as possible and as cheap as possible. I know quite a hand full when it comes to saving poly (tri counts) but again some outside feedback would be really helpful.

    So here is the reference:

My Models in Z Brush and 3ds Max(total of 3 trees):

I know I only have 4 plants and need allot more to go for variety but this is all I have so far.

Ok so here is the scene like 20% done haha but I took some time out today to work on it, I still might go for the greenish atmosphere but the cool and warm orange fit perfectly with this scene (the orange lights are there just for a rough layout). But I will do both the cool and greenish atmosphere...I know the bridge looks small compared to the shrubbery in the scene I scaled it up but didn't take a screenshot ...so it does look better if you were wondering. Please any suggestions are welcome...I know for critq. is kind of early.

So here it is! sorta almost kinda done....yeah... I noticed that some trees and plants seem to be repetitious (working on that at the moment) but I have about half a dozen more trees/plants to put in.
(sky dome and water material by UDK/ everything else is my work) I will attempt to make my own water material as soon as everything is done (as the last time I made my own water material it wasn't so great @_@).

            Cool Progress

The progress is looking good. At the bottom of your posts, you show off the bank of the river with all the rocks and stuff. This area is coming along nicely, although I would wait until you have the base landscape done and set in stone (no pun intendid) before you set dress (this will prevent a headache trying to move all the assets that you placed back to the new base mesh). I would say the biggest two areas that need some lovin, are the sky (use your own, its really easy, ill show you in class if you want), and the overall 'mountains/river banks.' i found that sculpting the base in zbrush then retopo in maya to be the easiest way to do this that have the best results. let me know if you have any questions. Great progress though...

Thanks!, I'll look into making my own sky, I know how to make one but have the clouds move is another issue, maybe you can show me how.

I decided to stray a little bit away from the concept just a little bit, since most of it is plain and lacks a focal point for the viewer(I think that's why I struggled with this project). So I am doing some paint overs from my stills to make the composition better. Trying to think of a good hero object to slap in the middle for a focal point (and of course still fitting to the style). Any suggestions would be really helpful, even if its for texturing, lighting, etc...

Just about done, just some DOF tweaks, lighting adjustments, and a little bit more set dressing and it will be good to go!

I think it's looking sharp, and I like the direction you took with the concept. Only thing I noticed is that your trees are all very similar in size, which flattens the scene a little. You might want to mix it up and vary those sizes to give it a bit more interest — you could even use one particularly large tree as a focal point, if you haven't sorted out what you want to do with that yet.

The foliage along the banks turned out excellent, by the way.

                      Default Hewitt's Critiques.... Enjoy :)

This first thing i noticed is (and i think this is the big thing to fix if you have time), there really is no definition between the foreground, mid-ground, and background. Separate then add some interest to the silhouettes of the composition.

The second biggest thing is, the plants are too saturated. Unless this is the style you're going for, use the desaturation node in the MAT Editor and desaturate all the plants by at least 0.25.

The last thing is, beyond the last big tree in the middle, there really is nothing going on. Add some plants that you already have made back there to add some depth.

All things considered, this project is coming together well. I was nervous for you when it was just the hills with no plants of rocks; but you set-dressed it nicely. Keep it up.

@ castlefolio, Thanks! I will defiantly take note of your comments and apply it to Hewitt's critique.

@ Hewitt. Thanks! That's what I needed, a paint over. I know I should have done it myself or something like that but didn't think about it this time around, I will fix that first thing in the morning!

This is looking awesome, great colors and translation from the concept.
