Default Anatomicae #15 - Day of the Tentacle

Day of the Tentacle
Deadline: August 22rd, 2011, 12:00 am EST

Grisled sea-goers beware! Sushi aficionados rejoice! Otakus blush!
The day of the Tentacle is here.

From tales of the Kraken to modern-day expose, creatures of a certain slimy multi-limbed pursuasion have fascinated us. Whether they like it or not, octupi and squid have become representative of a whole slew of themes, from the scary to the fetishized.

We're tasking YOU to make an image that focuses on the theme of the graspy, slimy, and be-suckered. It can be an illustration that features such things predominately, or a creature concept design.

Important: Do your research and find your reference. Cartooning is allowed, but we'd really love to see some work that is informed by the real and physical. Octupi and squid, due to their nature, are very difficult to paint. The better you understand their structure and texture, the better your image will be.

We will be critiquing on-
-Texture
-Form/volume
-Narrative (if it has one)
-Quality of character design (if it has one)

Sounds like a both fun and interesting challenge. If I can come up with an idea, I'll dive right in...

EDIT: Ok, some very quick studies getting to know the animals body and limbs. Really fascinating animals:

Mindbender: crazy colors and texturing. It will be great to see you work this up to something more specific.

hi - I made some studies too - with the Humboldt Squid as a model.

        @ mindbender - I like that it's such a small boat. and I think I a parasol.

Nethri: If you decide to pursue any of those studies for a piece, I would suggest your rightmost one. The colors and way you handled the strokes is very much spot-on in depicting the slimy texture of octopus skin.

So I'm thinking about entering this one, it would be my first time. Everyone's work is so intimidating is the dumbo octopus an acceptable creature or do we need to stick with the traditional octopus/squid?

Kismet: If you focus on recreating the texture of the animal, then we're a go. It's not a requirement to illustrate a full-blown octopus of a recognizable species however, so feel free to experiment.

@mindbender: more details - are you planning to add some more vibrant colors too?

@choo - thank you I am still trying to find a good idea.

here's something I sketched today... maybe I should make thumbs too.
