Default Anatomicae #14 - Fantasy anatomy

Fantasy anatomy
Deadline: July 23rd, 2011, 12:00 am EST

Re-search and Analyse real muscle structure and Apply that analysis into a fantasy creature of your choice, you are free to make up any creature as long as the muscles are built and able to move properly.

A perfect example is a dragon which so far never existed but still some designers make it look believable.

Restrictions:
-Side view of the creature only.
-Attach the References next to your sketches.
-you cannot put skin, everything else is ok.

failing to meet this requirements will lead you to not make it into the finals.

Example:

Image by Todd lockwood , visit his page for more amazing and inspirational pieces.

What the winners get?
You get... EXPOSITION, Your entry will be posted at the Official Anatomicae Gallery, you'll be on the banner at the very top of this page and temporarily on the front page of cghub (the top squares where all the other nice art come in too) and a nice shiny Badge next to your name! Are we not so nice?

          Great topic! I'm in
Just one question though: Do cartoons and stuff like that count as fantasy creatures (like Mickey Mouse or the Pac-Man in the icon above)? Or is this specifically about creatures like mermaids and dragons, which are more believable?

Since the last Anatomicae got shut down, can I recycle the critter I was making for that?

mindbender, The link is working for me, is anyone else having a problem with it?

SARDEANIE, Haha! will look forward to see what you come up!

MetalFingers, Glad to have you aboard!

Smirtouille, Yeah! that's the way to go

jose8a, As long as you will make the muscle believable, you're good to go, but remember, it has to look like it can function properly like any other creature/animal/human.

            Peter_Coene, Yes you can

wow It would be awesome if all the 92 members checking the thread out would participate, wouldn't that be crazy?

can't wait to see what you guys will bring on the table!

I'd be really interested in trying this one. I will be on vacation for this week (I won't have my equipment at hand) so I will just have 5 days to finish it. Oh well, IŽll start sketching a bit in the beach and try to post it when I get back.

BTW by "references" do you mean actual images you've used as reference or book citations, web links etc.?

Trasto, You're more than welcome to participate! About the references, i'm refering to actual images which you will need to analise/study.

Okay this is a vampire. (It has black gums) I mixed the human skull with the cat skull.

I'm not sure if this is what you guys want so it can be further polished. Actually I have miss-originated Masseter muscle, I'll correct that.
I don't know if you want the entire body or not. I hope I get some time to correct if I have not followed the rules.

I used no image reference, but I have a cat skull on my desk. : )

              Edit: This is more accurate.

Smirtouille, That's a good start, try to stay out of too close to human, push that skull into even more feline skull, perhaps enlongate it a little bit more like a jaguar or lion, also we need a full body, is it possible that you can take a photo of that skull or the same replica on the net?, otherwise than that really nice!

owaru, no problem with that, go traditional, scan it and post it! will be waiting for your sketches.

                Keep them coming guys

                Default oops

Shucks, I screwed up because I thought I remembered the rules before I left for vacation and started sketching without rereading the part about having to do a side view, lol. Anyway, this is what I thought up so far, I'll be doing a side view of this critter. Fun topic, btw!

@ Smirtouille, i love your use of color. I don't have any confidence when it comes to color at all yet and have been really studying up on color theory, this'll be good practice for me, your work is inspirational!
