    Default The Faunrus

Alright, so I'm new but I figured the best way to get involved is to just jump in. Plus, I think trying to complete these challenges will really help me a lot. And fantasy animals? Huzzah!

So here's what I'm working on, this is the sketch so far.

It's a Faunrus. Mythical Taurus, which would be the winged bull version not the astrological sign, and a Faun.

I'm not too happy with his right arm, particularly the hand, and wings are just not something I'm accustomed to. It still needs a lot of work, but I thought I'd share

Half griffin, half centaur , perhaps a "Griffintaur" does exist...

      Default My final.... Prolly

I think this is my last draft. Let me know if there are any glaring defects or if you'd like to see anything different.

cyl1981: cool start. Plus it's always nice to throw a hot chick in any picture.

PumpkinHat: It's disorienting looking at yours 'cause it's mine as a different race. Same head forward, left arm back, right arm holding a staff, same extended animal leg... oh yeah and tough! Anyhow, cool design. Balance seems off. It feels like he's leaning to far forward for where his legs are. I'd say select from his hips up and just use the rotate tool. Easy fix. Also the leg on the right side is torqued weirdly. There's no calf, the thigh is a bit long and the foot is twisted too far out. I hope this is useful. Cheers!

Gyork: cool idea and good start. A bit disjointed, but that's a first draft for ya. PS: You have a pretty sick portfolio.

        Thanks Solo :3

This is very helpful. I felt that something was amiss, and I'm still going through the learning process.

Sorry about the similarities between the two. I just picked two random species that I thought sounded interesting. Plus, a winged bull man sounded pretty awesome. I did several drafts of the pose and before they were all so primal and I felt it didn't quite suit. In each of those the figure was hunched. Maybe I didn't quite do away with the habit.

I didn't even notice the problem with the leg, though now it seems obvious. *doh*

Btw, I LOVE the spots on your hybrid. It's a nice touch.

Solo: looking good, love the lighting, atmosphere, and how you it all together. Just one suggestion, the huge boulder behind the creature, perhaps you can try a slightly colder hue, to push it back into the bg, and bring the main subject even closer to the audiences, I might not be right about that, but it always an option to consider if you wanted to tweak around a bit

Gyork: that is one hell of a creature , keep em going ^ ^

Pumpkinhat: try extend the left arm a bit, currently it looks like it slightly shorter then the right arm; if you are having trouble with the wings, look up some references, I know it a pain to depict something that one is not accustom to, but once you get the hang of it, then it you that will benefit from it, hope it helps, keep the idea rolling

Some of you might already know this, it a good idea to flip your image every now and then to check whether things are looking persuasive or not. We sometimes can be too comfortable with certain views, and get too caught up in it.

Play around with color variation option in the image adjustment tab as well, it a quick way to let you bring things forward and push things back.

Just of the somethings I often play around with when I do my pictures, hope this will help some of you as you progress

Going to keep playing around with this one, til next time keep well guys

So finally got a chance to scan my sketches in. My idea combines a hydra with a roc. The following image is just a collection of studies. Im taking inspiration from eagles as well as various lizards and snakes. Im having a little trouble dealing with so many heads they seem to be cluttering the silhouette so I have to play around with that some more, or I might opt to remove two of them making more of a cerberus roc instead.

My sister told me that, while a mythical creature is an animal people used to think was real, a fantasy animal is an animal nobody thought was real - like a Nazgul.

Concept sketches and improving drawings of a giant hog hybridized with a killer squid...and a unicorn-horned (two-headed) nazgul snake.
(two sketches with it having the backwards-facing feet of an Amazon legend)

EDIT: hips are always a problem in my drawings...so if i keep the leggedness of it, I may borrow elements of giant salamanders, with the skin folds covering the joint.
(though nazgul-izing a snake almost seems too easy - the torn clothes are kinda like half-shed skin - though that's how lizards shed, not snakes)

if I might suggest something - look at two-headed snakes and turtles in RL. that might help; though you don't really seem to need help.

The Bird of Paradise...from Purgatory! seriously, great set of diagrams of what seems an entirely plausible creature.

Liking what I see around here. Looking amazing as usual Cyl. @Solo: I would consider going to town with that head (detail). The rest of the image works, but there's not really any focal point.
Here's me wip, combining two of the biggest badasses in mythological history, Medusa, and the Manticore. "Medusicore"
