It does not have to be a painting. It just needs to look finished. Sketches aren't considered finals. This is a good example of a final drawing. Of course, we'd like to see it in it's natural habitat. If you'd like to draw all of that out in pencil go for it!

okay; thank you for the clarification. I was just starting to panic because I have no painting supplies.

You are generous Brynn, but I would hate to accept the extra time and still not come through. I'm scrounging for extra time and it's not looking good. Not complaining just overloaded lately. Really bums me out! Maybe others could take advantage of a couple more days?

I second this -- I'm getting new pens today or tomorrow, but I don't think a few extra days will help me any: I've gotten my final pencil-lines done, very faintly drawn, and just need to ink them; I can't think of anything to add or subtract from it.

but I second the thought that perhaps others will be able to do with extra days, even if I can't.

It uses the bioluminescent spines to attach the debris to itself and to attract a wider variety of organisms.

Clearly, I need to work on how I put it all together. *nods*

(that was also a check to see how non-pens come through after paintshop and shrinkage; tomorrow's pen day, thankfully)

Default The Smyertch Seal (Russian for death seal)

Hi all, thought i would not have time for this one but found we had a new deadline.

The Smyertch Seal is a bottom dweller of the southern ocean on the planet Annarya

The shallow seas of this tropical world is further warmed and powerd not just by its star but by its many thermal vents (smokers).

Many of the planets aquatic life have evolved around thease vents and the Smyertch seal is no different.

This grusome creature hides under a carpet of detritus it collects (bones, shells ect.) and which drifts down from the busy enviroment near the smokers vent.

It lures prey towards its mouth with its retractible tounge and bio-luminescence.

Cool idea Stimpy. I like how he just lays there in a heap rather unassuming and unnoticed even letting other creatures live on him.

I stole a fat hour and worked out a side shot. No real eyes to speak of but the forward gland from its maw provides the senses of taste/smell as well as some motion and electrical detection.

to both Stimpy and Sardeanie - you both have made very cool critters. if certain interstellar wildlife organizations would permit its export, I'd love to have one of each of them in my local public aquarium.

Sardeanie - are the blue band the gills, or is the structure behind them the gills? (or both?)

may I assume the jaws can also slide forwards to grab prey? (and that's what is shown)

I like how you hint at other occupants of its ecosystem - both the ones in shadow, and the ones crawling/dead on it.

(the pens were sold out - made do with the pens I already had). imho, this is not suitable for the Finals Thread.

The iir are a species new to the IWCA. However, efforts by the Radiosoli have permitted us a glimpse into the underlying anatomy of iir. The only images of iir which the Radiosoli have shared, however, are from a children's naturalist book.

The tubercles covering the skin are thickly peppered with chemosensors attuned to detect the proximity of prey. The Radiosoli speculate that iir brains, simple as they are, can switch between a state of Underside and Overside so they taste the water and not whatever the iir are presently gripping to camoflage themselves.

The large 3rd segment or tail is given over to elecro-sensing and -generating cell bands, much like the electric eel of Earth and the o'o'h of Tapis. Too weak to electrocute prey, the iir tail may well be a relic of a bygone time; experiments on modern iir reveal that, when an electric current is generated, the skin goes taut, streamlining the body by pulling the gripping patches of blubber into the body's outer layer, facilitating the twice-annual unencumbered swimming.

The gills attach to the gillplate’s hinge by means of a muscular root clinging to the plate and to a smaller, fully internal bone. The gillplate opens and closes minutely under the sticks-and-stones wrapping of camoflage, which is sufficient for respiration.

Two pairs - of the four-pair of limbs basally common to all backboned life on Annarya - have attempted to specialize as mouthparts in the iir clade; like in Earth centipedes, they are still easily recognizable as legs.
