      Default Merlin WIP - color

More progress. Colorized my DJ Merlin. References used are leather pants, leather trenchcoats, old man's face, and hand pose. More laser & stage effects will be added, as well as some more magic.

My first time participating in one of CGHub's challenges, I've always loved the figure of merlin, so chance to put a new spin on him was too good to resist!

On thinking what kind of job he'd have, I've always thought hand blown glass wares looked like they had a touch of magic about them, and who could resist keeping a draconic assistant on hand to help out! So here's the first quick greyscale pass before I start adding colour and flesh out details.

Hey zephyri, very cool depiction of Merlin! Can't wait to see it finished!

Here's another update after working on it some more today. Happy with how Merlin's turning out, but need to go do some practice with dragons, since it's been so long since I last drew one! Hoping to hint at a Harley parked just to the right as it seems to be the sort of ride he'd have .

Everyone else's stuff is looking cool though! Causelm: really like the idea... I can totally imagine magic coming in handy as a chef (could do with those kind of powers in my own kitchen). Love the expression and the placement of the various items forms a nice composition! Hope you're going to give his pants and shoes a little more love.. the folds in his pants feel quite lax, and a bit or personality to them would only add to his quirky character! You might also want to potentially darken the white of his jacket so the blue reflected glow comes out brighter, like it is on the rest of him.

Jsolorzano: for some reason your images aren't showing for me anymore (were earlier today), but I think you went in the right direction with the change of pose! It gave off a nice confident air that a DJ would need, especially one as pyro-technically advanced as Merlin! If my memory isn't playing tricks on me (forgive me if this isn't the case) I seem to remember thinking the folds in his leathers could ahve done with being a little more inconsistent.... a lot of them seemed to be the same size and distance apart.

TestosteronMan: Cool idea with the bum thing... and I'd love to see him in situ.. on the street with everyone just passing him by while he conceals himself with magic. Nice dramatic ligting too, and defintiely a darker feel over all for merlin to take.

Alterici: I instantly thought of professor too... just seems like he'd be a natural fit! Definitely like the whole multi tasking feel to it.. i wonder if there might be a better way to compose the image so you can still see everything he's doing, but see more of Merlin himself... viewers would get more of an emotional kick from actually seeing it's him from the front, I think (Less you have specific reasons, in which case ignore me) - like if you were to move the camera round to the right, and look diagonally across at the board, which he'd be sat more in front of?

        Good stuff all round!

          Thanks for that comment zephyri!

The reference I am using for the coat actually has the wrinkles like you mentioned, so I will tweak them a bit and make them more random. At the moment I am working on the background.

                Default Merlin rework

Okay, I took your advice, zephyri, and came up with something more dynamic (I hope). So here's my new sketch! Let's see where this one goes.

                  Thanks Bobby!

CarbonBl4ck - nice dynamic pose you've got there, and I really like how you're using the headphone cable as an extra design cue - almost getting a kind of street-art feel to it!

Jsolorzano - ah can see the images again now! His pants look great.. I think my main area of concern were the wrinkles by his chest and on his right arm (as we view it) - they all felt quite similar. Liking your colour scheme too!

Alterici - definitely an improvement for me... be sure to use subtle shadow lighting to pick out your shapes once you get into it, but the read that he's doing something magical feels much more instant now.

                    Default Hats in the ring

Ok I saw this one and had to give it a try. I always figured as merlin as more of a wander and for some reason I felt that her would be the old guy you'd see in a road house or biker bar on a good night playing the blues.

let me know if theres anything you guys got that could make it better.

CARBON_BL4CK - What you got going on is fine, as long as it's following the general rules of this character challenge. See if you can make him look at least 40, a few wrinkles around the eyes and some gray or silver hair might help to give that "Merlin" impression, but it's up to you of course. It looks like he's mixing an album, so he can use his magic to retrieve some more records or grab a drink floating in mid-air. Basically have his abilities aid him in his work.

                          - Looking good there! I know this is just a sketch, but I wanted to make sure that Merlin will get the center of attention - color-wise. I'm sure you already have this planned out though. Looking forward to your lighting and seeing it done!!
