Default Sketching, but with paint? How?

For some reason, I can't grasp the concept of sketching with paint. There's something about issuing certain strokes of paint to get out a nice rough/ concept, whether it be a character or a landscape. It has a lot to do with value, I know, but there is also brush choices. I mainly use either Painter or Photoshop, and with both, I never get the result I desire.

Example of what I'm trying to do: http://cghub.com/images/view/83562/

    Any tips are welcomed.

Don't have much time as im about to go out, but tips -

    1. Start with a really big brush and only go smaller when you have used that brush as much as possible, only detail the important bits.
    2. Give yourself a strict and short time limit say 10 minutes. As you get faster you get rougher with better results.

It's about learning big important shapes that make the form of your figure. He mainly uses 3 values (highlight, midtone, shadow) to make his forms.
Think he also makes use of the lasso tool for the folds in the clothing.

also i actually think that for that sketchy look - textured brushes should be used, because they do all the trick! you can google for some or make some yourself (by applying some grainy texture to your brush in the brush settings!)
