    Default Architectural Rendering: My classroom

Here's my first post of this WIP which is actually almost finished by my standards. Please feel free to comment upon anything that catches your eye. I'm using Mental Ray as renderer and I was looking to get results as photorealistic as I can with MR so if you also know anything I could tweek to help my cause, I'd appreciate to learn anything you know.

My first render after the 3d modeling was mostly finished (some objects were left out at that point also to reduce render time and material processing by the renderer). This one was a result of photometric light with a warmer white setting which I then changed for something a bit cooler. At the time, the lights as a physical object were not yet in the scene.

another render with a cooler light temperature (and again the materials were standar materials)

And the last one. Most objects are in the scene. Textures are more specific to every object, I used mostly promaterials and a few arch-design ones. The floor was yet to be textured.

One issue that troubles me is that I placed from the beginning the lights sligthly below ceiling level as I didn't have the lights as an object at first. But if I then included glass for the ceiling, which is done. I'm guessing it would be a good idea to experiment putting the light sources slightly above the ceiling level, where the tubes would be... In my next render, all necessary geometry will be done, floor and chairs will have material. And I'm presently working on putting a more realistic texture and look to the lights (the glass) with a bump map.

Well I think some things look cleaner in this last render altough Ive been experimenting a lot with the texture on the ceiling lights as I didnt want to make it as simple as white pannels... It didnt work very well at first, I tried self-illuminating them but discovered that doing that it reduced the effect of the bump map I put in... Then I decided to put the self illumination to 0 and try self illuminating objects above the ceiling (the scene lights themselves didnt illuminate the ceiling but for global illumination and final gather) because I wanted a light source closer to the actual glass on the ceiling... In this render, a main problem is that I forgot to turn off the shadows on the glass from the illuminating objects above.Regarding textures, things are generally cleaner but I'm not sure I like the texture on the tables, it reflects a bit too much of the other objects in the scene. It may be cause I assigned a matte plastic texture, I didn't really know what material the table was, it's not really wood and it's not really plastic.

Then I simply tought of rendering the lights separately and later include that image in the last render. So work in photoshop may be necessary next...

But some elements I included need to be rendered with the whole scene, so in the end I may just re-render the whole thing.

I think I know what kind of material you are trying to go for on the desks and I think all you need to do is lower the reflectivity of the material. Maybe kinda like this?

I would need a picture of your classroom to compare, but I hope that helps.

Also, maybe add more reflectivity to the keyboards, they look a bit flat or add some noise in the bump

          Thumbs up @ricksilliker

Yes, actually it is something of the kind. I know I could reduce reflectivity if I make it with a standard material (or in any case one I set myself), however with promaterials I am not aware of a way to do that besides changing the options between: polished, glossy and matte (I have put matte). Actually I tried to go back to doing the material myself with the standard material options, but there is now an issue that makes it appear correctly on the viewport but once I render the desks are just black (whether I put the new or old material and I don't know why)As for the keyboard I am not sure how it should appear, but I understand you'd like to see some noise on the surface, I haven't tested that out yet as I didn't believe it would make a big difference on a small object but I may try it. This is the one I tried to make:

And for the picture I will take one very soon, probably tomorrow, because I actually should have done that a while ago. So thanks for reminding me and I hope you'll still comment on my thread after the picture is uploaded. Oh by the way do you know any way of showing a tumbnail of the work in the WIP's page? I noticed mine appears as a small green square.

Colours in the picture look a bit different than if I look at the class with my eyes and I'm not very good with a camera...

This is the mixed render of the last render and the ceiling lights render

            Uploaded with ImageShack.us

And finally the same render with lens flare effects from Photoshop included
