Here's a new one:

Create your very own biker gang member from AKIRA!




Feel free to design your own motorcycle as well, but I won't hold you to it. Just make sure you're trying your best to match the assignment. Watch the movie, understand the history within the film. Your character doesn't have to be part of the Capsules gang, but should definitely appear to be from the same world.

Gather as much ref as you can on Neo-Tokyo, and cyber-punkish genres (using the term loosely here)

RULES AND GUIDELINES:

Layout/Size: Keep all submissions to 1000-1200 pixels in height or width. It's okay if its slightly larger or smaller than that, just don't go too crazy.

Submissions: Post Final Images in Finals Thread (To be posted later.)

-One Entry Only

-Minimum 3/4 of character must be visible.

-Any medium is acceptable except photography.

-No sketches for finals, must show finished work.

-Follow the character description to the best of your ability.

-Focus on your illustration. Pay attention to anatomy, shape, form, and lighting. USE REFERENCE. Don't fret if answers don't always come too quickly. Remember, critical thinking is key to great character design.

Might have to enter this one, I love Akira and especially the manga as well as the cyberpunk genre...

Just some notes that may be useful: Although they only appear very briefly some of the other gangs are mentioned in the manga... The 7th District Carburetor Boys, The Wild Cocks (LOL), and The Pretty Bombers...of course the capsules and the largest and most verminous, the Clowns.

Might be a useful starting point for some...

BUT to be fair - a lot of concept artists/illustrators use 3D to set up the image as a base?! I use sketch up for anything complicated then paint over the top...

If you think you have the time, 3D is acceptable. The deadline for this may be a bit too tight...

Well, real life is a little intrusive for me right now but it's fun trying to reproduce that character style. This face took me about 15-20 minutes. I think I gave him a bit too much in the way of Obama ears. Kaneda's ears look smaller and don't stick out so much.

OK I was inspired by the character of Chiyoko (not in the movie at all but one of the main protagonists in the comic) to depict a female bike gang member...Those who have read the manga will know what I mean.

Did some thumbs and narrowed it down to these two for further development.

Great Forge this time - Akira introduced me to the anime-world

Attached you can see the new gang member "Ashitaka" - He´s also also a friend of hightech bikes, same as Kaneda.

He´s quite a nerdy person, always waering his school uniform; nevertheless his a cool gang member with a distinct style.

Superearly stage - might change a lot still! Took me about 15 min.
