So it seems I did a lot less today, somehow wasted a lot of time being 'bored.' Yet I did remember the old lesson about patience. I've been getting pretty impatient since I've been doing quite a bit of work recently and feel like I'm not improving quick enough, so I had a point today when I was about to give up on that Sargent study before realising I'd only spent about half an hour on it. So I slowed down and really looked at the image, and just got on with it. Still not very happy with how non-Sargent it looks, but I'm just glad it looks more readable than it did when I was getting pissed...

That last self portrait shows really nice values and some great colour choices, especially in the subtle saturation control. However, I feel like this piece could have been really pushed with a few simple proportion changes and a little tidying up with some of the shapes/edges. I feel like it may have been missing a hard edge where the ear meets the side of you face, which would have helped to push the form a little. Also, small issues jump out at me, the earlobe doesn't appear to be wide enough blah blah etc. the specifics aren't so important as much as the overall principal, any of these things would be quick fixes, but the kind that really give your work a more finished look. I know that might not always be the aim of a study, but it's worth pushing the occasional one to completion just to see that you can. However the whole image reads nicely, do more and really focus on how the form reads above all else!
