Overall in this activity we we be focused on places rather than people or creatures. These will be the sets, or matte paintings if you like, upon which characters, creatures, or vehicles might play out their respective roles within the broader story line of a game, movie, or art for a print work.

Direct tracing of a photograph, either digital or with tracing paper is not accepted for the activities, regardless of whether the artist owns the photo or not. Period. Fair warning ... 'nuf said. For more information on this topic: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?p=55427#post55427

Until we have a 3D version of this activity, I am willing to accept works that were prepared with 3D programs as long as you pick a single view and export that view to a 2D file format for upload. In the case of this thumbnail round I mean that each thumb will be a single viewpoint, but please don't draw just one thing and snap it from six different viewpoints.

(This paragraph basically copied wholesale from Mike Corriero for the plain reason that it makes so much sense): Please don't keep everything a secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per se, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

BrynnMetheney and Juto had once suggested we have an activity devoted to industrial design, and Juto also suggested an activity devoted to thumbnails. http://cghub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3186 In this round we will prepare thumbnails that are 300 wide by 240 tall. Our six best will be our entries. Here is a template you can arrange them on:

I would suggest you do many more than six thumbnails and just show us the very best six for your entry.

The brief: The Eastwood IX was the dreadnought ship of a dissident group led by Marcus Sheridan, a successful weapons engineer or 'forgesmith' from the world of Alfayth. ( http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3844 )(See also http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3694 ) Marcus Sheridan made his fortune by being one of the few men in his nation able to build and supply tools & weaponry to the local insurgent factions. Through cunning and careful placement of resources, he was able to quickly buy out or eliminate his competitors. His wife was one of three warlords from a powerful insurgent faction called 'Hiriam's Kin'. They were an ambitious lot who sought to escape the local government and seek out other planets and colonies to conquer. Eventually they would succeed, and after a victory celebration in the felled city of Orsepica They embarked on their first expedition into space.

After several years of failed conquests aboard their ship and a tremendous loss of resources, the Emperor of Orsepica's sister nation tracked and captured the vessel carrying the insurgent faction. Sheridan was only five years old when his/her parents were executed by airlock evacuation along with all other senior members of the organization. See http://cghub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3299

You are to make thumbnails of the dreadnought vessel Eastwood IX, inside and out. In this round we will prepare thumbnails that are 300 wide by 240 tall. Our six best will be our entries. That is your mission.

Clarification please; are you interested in how the ship was at the time of

Maiden voyage: "Eventually they would succeed, and after a victory celebration in the felled city of Orsepica They embarked on their first expedition into space."

Amidst conflict: "several years of failed conquests aboard their ship and a tremendous loss of resources."

Post Capture: "Orsepica's sister nation tracked and captured the vessel carrying the insurgent faction."

Or more a current view "relic of the past" kind of topic?

Whichever one you like best. Where do you think you will get the best thumbnails?

Shay- I have moved you to the Concept and Illustration subforum as that is where we put the general concepts and Illustration. If your post contained legitimate thumbnails of the Dreadnought Eastwood IX then you may post the thumbnails in here using our attachment manager function. In here we are running a specific recurring activity to draw according to a specific topic. This is not the area for links to your personal website saying "Hey, look at me. Hope you like." Might I suggest starting a sketchbook in our sketchbook area.

I just need a couple more good interiors I think. Anybody have any likes/hates out of this stuff?
Here's a couple passes at an AOI interior thumb using different camera settings. I think the first one does a little more for me.

Ho hum, did a quick pass on this for warm up since I suck at thumbnailing in the first place.

I might not be able to finish these in time, but I'm starting to get an idea of where to go if I get some time to work on them and make them proper ones.

Is there any preferred size for these thumbnails or can I make them as wide or narrow as I want?

Well I was looking for six of them at 300 wide 240 tall, but participation is down so I'll take what I can get at this point.

Oh, duh, saw it now. Thought the specifications might be in the brief if anywhere. :P

Alright, I'll do them that size if I get the time then

Might be little participation because people are just slowly getting back into their routines after the holidays. Maybe pushing the deadline helps?

I fixed the deceptive description. I will think over the extension. We try to stay away from them as much as possible but the holidays and the contests have been hurting activity participation.

I am making a small extension until Sunday midnight PST for those who need another weekend to work on this. No further extensions will be granted no matter what anyone posts unless they outrank me, and we are starting the next round today anyway.

Just wanted to say I'm out. I seem to have some memory problem that makes me unable to almost anything. Been fighting it all day. Reformatting next.
