@Grumbleputty: Thanks! That really means a lot coming from a talented artist such as yourself! If I were to critique anything about your designs, it's that I'm not entirely sure the Widlisa's tusks would do much at all pointing so brusquely backwards. Unless you've already thought of that :P

@Robobobo: Welcome to the challenge! Looking forward to seeing your creatures, as well! I like your take on the Lapi, that's the on I'm struggling with most at the moment...

Here's more progress on mine, where I discovered a fatal flaw: the tones (I think that's the word I'm looking for) are all wrong. This is what it looks like at the moment:

    Name: Scenev3Prog1.jpg
Views: 0
Size: 100.8 KB

This is what happens when I convert it to greyscale:

The Widlisa turns into little more than a silhouette, and the ground is lighter than the sun... I think I'll be adding some of the Rukoi's darker shades to the Widlisa. Hairy version coming soon :P

Thanks, and you're right about the tusks. I have a very vague idea of how the tusks could function (pushing aside the thorny leaves so that the mouth can reach some sort of deliciousness inside the plant), but no idea how to communicate it- and without figuring out how to tell the story, it comes off looking distractingly awkward. I'll need to address that in my final somehow.

Here's where I wound up after today's train ride to work- my first shot at combining all three organisms into a scene together

Skidesigns- Nice idea switching to grayscale to check values- I need to start doing that to check my stuff too. I like seeing how you work, and I can't wait to see that hairy version!

Robobobo- I don't know about submitting three seperate images, but an image with three individual panels would probably be ok. Very nice work on the Lapi bush, but check the spec on the scale- I think it describes the bush as being medium sized (although generally in the judging folks are pretty forgiving about following the spec, so long as the image is cool in the end).

Awesome work so far everyone! Looking forward to seeing more progress!

@ TwoExZee -Thank you! Nice studies! Really liking the patterning and the texture your suggesting. You might think about the backbones of your creatures - they seem to dip abruptly. Perhaps you could lengthen the bodies a bit? Looking forward to more!

@ tsadlyre - Thanks! Nice start! Love the stance and skin of the Rukoi! I like the way your handling the legs on these guys too. Looking forward to more!

@ SkiDesignS - Nice action pose! Love the angle! I'm excited to see more progress and detail

@ Grumbleputty - Thanks! Yeah I know I gotta push these guys. I haven't had much time between things recently but I will try to get some work done on them soon Great start! I love the way you've handled the 'extra' legs. They are a bit tough to deal with. Looking forward to more! Great action in your second post btw!

@ Robobobo - Great start on the Lapi Bush! Looking forward to what you come up with further on. Yes, you may post three separate images for this round. However, each separate image may only contain one of the organisms.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Quick nip in to check on everyone, haven't had time to do anything for my food chain, unfortunately.

@Grumble: Love the action pose man, but you'll want to check the Rukoi's front limbs, it looks like he's just tripping forwards.

@Robobobo: Looks fantastic! can't wait to see your creatures, as well!

Gonna push myself to do some work tonight, hope to have something to show tomorrow!

        Good night, y'all!

You're absolutely right- I wanted to suggest that it uses it's spade-shaped hands to push off from the sand as it runs, but it's not coming across- just as you pointed out, it looks like he's tripping on them. I'll need to work that out a bit more.

-looking forward to seeing your next step!

Robobobo: Wow, that's just beautiful- nice work on the Lapi bush! If you can bring that level of skill to the other two creatures, we're all in trouble!

I think this is my final piece already.
I don't have time to tinker around it anymore. T.T

Sorry for the late post, been busy with Christmas

@FateSilver: Nice work, man, very atmospheric! I love the surreal look of the Widlisa!

@Robobobo: I love the brushwork on your designs, but the form of the Rukoi doesn't seem quite on par with the Lapi. Why is his overbite so exaggerated? His feet look like they belong on a slow herbivore, but his legs work for a fast carnivore. The tail is far too short for the sting to do much in that position. Other than that, keep up the great work!

Here's some progress on mine. Fixed the levels, shrank the figures, added some ground shadows, added some highlights and the Lapi bush. Oh, and added some hair to the naked Widlisa Man, I didn't even realize how little time there is left :|

              1. he need his jaws just for grabbing, rest does acid, so i think appropriate situation of maxilla and mandibula is not so important.
              2. legs? huh, i think you're right, but i dont have much time so i wont probobly fix them
              3. ill just remove sting
and i think you should cut a little Lapi and Widlisa, they are like one creature at the moment)

yeah, I kind of intended that, I was thinking they would have a sort of symbiotic relationship like anemones and clownfish. The Widlisa gets protection and food, but it also attracts the Rukoi for the bush to grow spikes.

I'm probably calling it finished about here...Might tweak it a bit tonight, though I'm not sure what I should do.
