Hello to all. I'm new to this site and these forums, and this is my first post. This is the first time I've put my art up anywhere besides Deviantart so I have to admit I'm rather intimidated by all the amazing talent here (unlike dA, where one can see a lot of crappy Naruto drawings get godlike praise).

So anyway, I'm an art student with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online for media arts and animation, and my main goal is to be *dundundun* a storyboard artist. I've done lots of research on the subject and have spent a pretty penny so far on books but, alas, I can't figure out why some storyboards have little arrows incorporated in them and why some do not. I gather these arrows are meant to show the direction of movement? Or maybe the camera's movement? Can somebody elaborate on this for me?

There's a lot of great artists here, and I hope I'll finally get the feedback I've been craving for so long. I feel like I have a lot of potential but there's so much missing from my own work that I want to improve on. I draw every day, feverishly. I challenge myself all the time. But getting some good quality criticism is what I'm really going for, from artists who know what they're talking about.

So if anybody has good advice about storyboarding especially, I'd love to hear what you have to say! How can I start making myself known as a good storyboard artist now so I can wedge myself into a good company someday? Of course, soon I hope to actually have some mock storyboards up to show what I already can do and let you all pick it apart. I'm working on it.

Ah, I know, this isn't an "introduce yourself" board (couldn't find one anyway...). I'm just a little nervous to be outside the comfortable regions of dA. So, it's nice to meet all of you. Kudos.

Well... I'm rather shocked that the books you bought specifically about storyboarding don't have information on the arrows you see in "storyboards" rather ironic... only cause they are like a very important part of story boards. And yes for the most part they indicate camera movement... not object movement. Normally an arrow moving left, right, up, or down indicates camera "panning" in that direction. An arrow pointing into the or out of the frame... tends to mean zooming or camera moving inward. oop... gotta go sorry.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised, too. I mean, one of them I'm still reading so maybe I haven't gotten that far yet, but yeah, no mention of them in anything else I've read in the past. :P I thought it was strange, too.

But thanks for the info and the welcome! Much obliged! They really make a lot more sense to me now.

Now that I think about it, camera movement just make sense. The drawings should show object and character movement by themselves. ^_^
