Default Creature Planets CPA #25 :: The Frai

Welcome to the Creature Planets, the CG HUB challenge of exploring worlds beyond our own, and the different species living within them.

Topic #25 :: November 1st 2010
Organism: The Frai
Planet: Deusr

Deadline: Sunday, Nov. 14th 2010 - 11:59p.m. [PST]

Here are the organism's details. Follow them to the best of your ability: This is a tough one...

IWCA Requirements – The IWCA requires a full profile of the species commonly known as The Frai.
Objects such as clothing and symbols of status are not required but are encouraged.
This species is trisexual so depictions of three Frai are required.
The IWCA asks that you indicate which class of Frai you are depicting: Upper, Middle and Lower. We are focusing on the Udunis Frai - The largest, modern colony of Frai on the planet.
The IWCA also recommends depicting the trio with signifiers such as tools, accessories, and anything else that will better educate an outside species about this culture.

Your task:

- Depict three members of the Frai species - Remember they are Trisexual so are capable of taking on all three sexual roles. Differences may be subtle but are very important.

Bioform Overview
These highly intelligent life forms are one of the known 12 other space faring species in our universe. These beings were the first to travel to over 8 different star systems other than their own and are highly active in the Intergalactic United Nations & Planets and even the IWCA. The Frai have agreed to be profiled by the IWCA to better educate others about other sentient life forms – a new project that the IWCA hopes will encourage peace among the more powerful of species who are able to travel among the stars.

Planet Notes
Deusr is a small planet that orbits a small Red Dwarf star. This tiny unseemly planet has produced one of the most notable Sentient beings in our known universe, The Frai. Deusr is a cold planet once made of tundra and thick forests. However, most of the planet is covered in colonies inhabited by the Frai.

Bio Notes
Type: Omnivore
Habitat: Large Terrestrial Cities and Metropolis.
Status: Least Concern
Social: Very Social – living in cities up to 7 million.
Temperament: Peaceful with history of violence
Activity Cycle: Constant
Metabolism: Active
Reproductive: Trisexual – requires three members.

Physiological Notes:
Avg. Size: Small – 37 kg
Morphology: Symmetrical
Skeletal: Vertebrate
Epidermal: Ranges from dark orange to deep red.
Limbs: 6 limbs
Location of Senses: Decentralized on the body
Primary sense: Visual
Secondary sense: Smell /Taste

Other Notes: This species is highly intelligent and has a fossil record that is older than humans. They are considered the more ancient of space faring species. The breeding practices of this species are also very special. The Frai rely on three members to produce offspring: a sperm producer, an egg producer, and a the host or carrier of the embryo. Take special note of the location of senses.

Be sure to keep in mind that we are not creating characters here, we are depicting a tool using species (like humans) under a biological light.
Remember, things like culture are extremely important to the evolution of a species - so have fun with it!

We have two weeks! Lets see what you can do!

Please let us know if you have any questions! Post them in this thread please.

“Please don't keep everything secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per say, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.” --Mike Corriero

No worries! Yes, you need to draw 3 of members of the species. You do not have to use a background. This is a 2D challenge so you cannot use 3D.

I hope this helps! Glad you're joining us again!

Sure, you could use it for that. We just can't have 3D models submitted to finals. Entries need to be drawn, painted, scratched, or smeared into existence - they can be digital or traditional - it doesn't matter. Just no modeling or sculpting.

      edit:

@ Hulahuga - Yes. This species is trisexual meaning they can take on either of the three sexual roles. It is up to you how they develop into these roles - do they remain trisexual? do they mature into a specific role? Its up to you.

Your progress is looking great so far! I like the color blue as well. Remember the Frai have 6 limbs I would try to steer away from humanoid shapes as much as possible too. Glad you're joining in!

Great . Glad to be here!

Doh regarding the limbs though.... XD missed that, will think of how I can integrate that... And there I got it, they already have only it isn't visible right now (will show soon .

Getting in the mood trying to find out their breeding grounds; ice caverns in the glaciers of the planet where the child-bearers sit in cut crevices nurturing the fetuses for long time periods.

They sit perched in these crevices to hide from both predators and pests. Since they willingly submit to a long incubation time to transfer the memories of their ancestors as well enabling the fetuses to grow to considerable size the others need to administer food. Thus the tracks in the walls...

In their chest the ribs are pivotal and hidden behind lies the birth sack. In these sacks the embryo and sperm are administered and from a chemical reaction the sacks swell considerably. The ribs function like a chest gate, each side an otherwise unused limb.

Due to the combustion during the incubation time in the sacks they don't suffer from the cold, a bit bees only they do it "themselves" (bees have workers designated to have extremely high combustion walking around the hives' breeding grounds keeping heat and actually selecting who will become what "class" since the classes originate from different heat levels).

            HELP!

When I try to pick colors I only get the respective color in the b/w... Please help if you can...

            My proof setup is cmyk.

FIXED: Went into application data, made a backup and deleted all PS settings... Pretty bad considerin I hadn't saved my workspace, but hey at least I can use colors...

@ CJordan - Hope to see them soon

Getting a feel for the colors... (definitely my weakest side, so critique is very welcome indeed )

Default Getting back in the game!

Here's my first shot at a Frai- I'm not sure which gender I'm depicting right now, but I'm imagining the embryo carrier as a massively swollen elder of the community, who hosts embryos for many couples simultaneously, and gives her life in the process of hosting all the young.

First rough idea, just workin out the biology first, Im gonna go back and distinguish each of the sexes a little more from each other. And then add some cultural elements to symbolise their intelligence and ability for space travel, not sure which of the classes I'd like to represent though... maybe the sexes are classes in themselves... hmmm... much pondering...

Here is what I have so far. The big one grows to become the one to carry the babies, the other two can give sperm and/or egg.
