the 'height' and 'linear height' modes in texture panel of brush palette - I don't know quite how they work exactly but I had a play today.

One thing I like is a bog standard brush but a bit of tooth to it like it's on paper, it makes me feel happier drawing that way. There's different ways to achieve this but one nice and simple way is to set texture on for the brush, set the mode to height, and fiddle with the depth til you get the toothiness you like. it seems to work intuitively and gives a nice papery grit to sketch lines! easy peasy.

Only tool presets atm. I need to recompile my brush list.
I love painting with the default round too, but I lack a little grainyness to give a paper feel at higher zoom levels. Textured brushes look great when you zoom in at 100%.

I have my default set called scribbles, which has all my basic painting brushes in it. Half of them I made from scanned images (pencil and marker mostly) and some others from here and there. I also have my different texture sets scanned from watercolor, ink, spray paint. I love custom brushes! Also, I made some pattern set for a few brushes that really add depth (scanned from paintings again)
I know a lot of people are die-hard basic brushes, but making your own really makes the tool feel like your own. Like that favorite pencil or pen.

Maybe sometime I'll swatch some of my brushes and put them on dev.art... but for now I feel like they are still a work in progress (aka very unorganized =) )

I don't use custom brushes, I just tweak the default ones minimally, for example by setting opacity to Pen Pressure. Not much else.
