Default Anatomicae #6 Head anatomy&expression

Welcome to the Anatomicae weekly activity! As you can see, there are 12 spots (12 weeks) on the banner to showcase a thumbnail for the first 12 study winners!

--------------------------------------------------------------

Head anatomy&expression
Explanation, what should i do now?:
Your objective for this round is to do a study of the Human head and its facial expression in a single image. We're paying especial attention to the visual Anatomy of the Head and the Facial expression on it, its really important that you concentrate on the form/shape of the muscles and bones and how those act while doing an expression!!
-The face expression don't have to be exactly front view, meaning there can be perspective too.
-Let's see how well you can convey that in your image!

-its always cool if you can set up your own stuff (like looking into the mirror and look at your face how it behaves while making expression and skin folding, as long as you follow the objective! But its not a must to.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Subjects explanation:

-Main subject (the subject you Have to re-create and study): Human Head

-Second subject (the one which with your Observation you will paint/draw into the main subject):Face expression

-Reference: (this will help you to study how to convey the forms/muscles on the Head by yourself)

-please don't feel obligated to do exactly the same colors or head/expression pose, you can always try to be creative while still spot on the objectives! .

-------------------------------------------------------------Week #05 ::

START: October 3rd 2010 (Sunday)

END: October 13th 2010 (Wednesday) at 23:00 GMT+1 (Berlin,Wroclaw)

--------------------------------------------------------------

Main Subject: (Choose one, male head or female)

Help Reference (This images are just to show/help you with how things works, you don't have to use it, but you should.):

You don't have to feel obligated to show any WIPs, but it will get you more cookies if you do so

      I just read a Chinese article on Sargent's teachings here - go ahead and read it if you understand Chinese, its really inspiring..

      The points that I noted in particular are translated very roughly here:

      1. he said to his student - dun be afraid to load your brush with paint - so that the colour become richer. apparently he squeezed out so much colour that the commentator noted it would be enough to do a few paintings with.

      2. his process, lay down the lines, and paint a midtone over it for a start. He paints out the lighting of the head, rather than the physical structure of the head. He does not seem to pay attention to details - doesnt care about the eyes, nose, mouth etc., but more concerned with the overall presentation of the head in light. He paints directly with oil paint. His starting phase is quickly executed, but when he reaches the painting proper, he displays high degree of concentration. He will think, stop his brush in midair, and does a precise stroke without hesitation. His face does not have visible, well-defined features for a large period of time - until when he is ready, he puts in a few calculated and precise strokes and the face looks alive.

      3. Think and see like a sculptor, be flexible and make fresh moves in constructing the painting.

      Got very pumped up and did a head study of the first guy up there. From photo ref, didn't attempt any expressions yet.

          Great subject, been in a slump so I've been feeling the need to do some facial studies, I suck at expression! Here's just the main subject tonight, grayscale for now:

          trotis: I think you're doing great so far! I think one thing I see is that her nose doesn't seem to have been affected by her smile. I'd expect with a smile that wide that her nose would widen or scrunch upwards a bit, following her laugh lines. You'd see less of her nostrils as well.
          Phoinix46: Looking good as well, very loose and playful

          Feels good to get in it again, lets see some studies!!

          Alright guys started to do my own now, 1h so far on and off while getting distracted

          @Phoinix46:
          I'm counting on you then!

          @zhaomeng:
          Really nice so far, i like the looseness, but don't forget to incorporate on your head study an face expression; its a shame i can't read chinese

          @trOtis:
          so far so good, take a look at your edges, i would refine the eyes a lil bit more and look at the muscles folds around the eyes,right now they look a bit too flat, also arenyth is right

          @arenyth: so far so good! i would just knock that white background to bring the highlights of the face and values, other way don't forget the expression on her

          @Everyone:
          Don't forget that you can always make changes and even create your "own" Head (see my example so far) feel free to change/add stuff as long as you meet the objective and the anatomy+Expression is clear! Be creative!

                another head study of the female this time I did in the morning. Was out of bed and did it quite in a hurry. Got tempted by putting in unnatural dark tones for cheap contrast and it turned out much uglier. but hey, we learn =P

                speaking of freckles... how do you paint the freckles???

                arenyth - really great job at the freckles... and the head proper is painted with good structure too.

                trotis - no, they aren't distracting at all, in fact i think they make her livelier. yeah, i think the scrunch might be a lil problem.. if u look at the girl in "" on the ref, she pulled up her eyebrows, widened her eye and her face down to overcompensate the scrunch, so her entire face retains its length. in your case, the wide smile expands the face horizontally, the cheeks will push up into the eyes and the brows would contract down a bit. Try smiling into the mirror =D

                johnsilva - hey thanks! yeah that piece is just meant as a study of the photo, I wouldnt do anything to it anymore and will be starting another one with the expression.. thanks for the reminder. As for your work, here's a paintover I did, I hope it's not uncalled for...

                1. i think the expression will be stronger if you imagine - scrunching the face, eyes, nose, mouth are all contracted together, then you push open the jaw for a roar, and pull back the eyebrows so the eyes are roundly staring into the opponent.

                2. i like the way you're working with the blending colours, maybe a step further is considering to paint out the outlines?

                  zhaomeng: For the freckles I actually just set a small spot brush to scatter and raised the spacing on the brush. Then I just lightly brushed for the lighter freckles and dabbed a bit harder on the places I wanted some darker spots. Kind of cheating, but I didn't have time to study where the spots were

                  And JohnSilva, maybe I'm misunderstanding, I thought we should have at least two finished pieces for these projects? One of the main subject and then one of the second subject? Should I have just looked at the reference and dove right into the expression? Sorry this is my first Anatomicae

                    Haha nice entries here!
                    I love the anatomicea challenges!!!

                    here is a sketch I did today,
                    My biggest failure is to go to fast in details so I learn step by step to see the whole image.

                      where I am at the moment... I think the colour's getting muddied, so I'm gonna fix it tonight..

                      - hi, good attempt! but i do think that it's quite flat - it might help to think the head as painting a sphere, rather than blocking in two sides of light and dark tones... =D

                        This is what I've done so far. Tried to do the man with expression #3. Think I've played it too safe as he's not looking quite as enthusiastic as the expression reference pic.
