I agree too, the pen pressure and precision is definitely necessary. I mean, what are the chances of doing perfect precise long strokes with the mouse all the time really? ^^

You can obtain a good result even without a tablet but if with a tablet you spend 10 hours to create an image you'll need 100 hours to obtain the same result with a mouse.

I've used computers since I was... 5?, and I finally bought a tablet about 7 years ago or more, since then I don't use the mouse anymore, the tablet has become an extension of my arm, and anytime I have to use I mouse I feel really uncomfy.

About the "need" for it, It's just a tool, you might do better with a mouse or even with a trackball or a touchpad... etc, just use whatever makes you feel better.

The best think I can tell you is... just try everything and choose it for yourself (I'd really like to test a cintiq for some weeks).

My first tablet was a wacom graphire, after testing it for some months I bought an intuos 3... and I'm still using it. I would also recommend buying a wacom instead others like genius.
My intuos is about 5 years old or so, and it's working like the first day .
I tested Genius and some other tablets long time ago and they were ok, but not as good as the wacoms.

If you finally decide to buy one, don't get the smallest one, try an A5 or bigger, that's what I learnt when I bought the graphire .

And the last thing, if you have never used a tablet, it will feel like sh*t at first, just relax and try to adapt to it, it will take you some days.

          Sorry for the long post.

Painting digitally with a mouse is like using your mouth to paint with brushes.

It isn't a matter of need so much as a matter of do you really want to spend twice as long on any given project. I'm using a touch screen nothing is faster than pen in hand directly on image.

Painter is an expensive program that you really aren't even getting HALF your money's worth without having a good tablet.

well you dont really need one to be able to do good looking stuff... but say tablets makes the process 50 times faster and less pain on your wrist... tendinitis can be really bad (the sickness you get on your wrist.. hurts like hell i heard.)

Gather some money together and buy at least an wacom bamboo fun (the one i have right now) and until now i'm really happy about it... although i'm getting some more cash for cintiq

having a tablet wont make you any better, most of the things that make a person good at art happen in their mind not some special action with their hands. time is a factor however..... things that can be done in one stroke with a tablet may take dozens of small strokes with a mouse to achieve. i would only advise using a mosue if a... you are allergic to tablets and contact with such will case a midld case of death. or b... if you have limitless time but cant afford the 50 or so bucks for a cheaper tablet. i doubt either of these is the case!

                      Default Don't just get a tablet...get a good one.....

If you buy too small of a tablet or one that lacks sensitivity you are not much better off than having a mouse. You need a tablet with a minimum sixe of 6x8 (9x12 is better) and make sure it has 1024+ levels of sensitivity. I recommend the wacom intuos line but if you are on a budget a genius 6x8(or 9x12) will serve you quite well until you can upgrade to the Wacom which perfoms a bit better.(Note the genius tablet does not support dual monitor setups).
