    Smile KelsM's Sketches 'n Things

Hey guys, new here. I'm really looking for good C&C, so lay em on me if you've got em. I want to make sure I'm always improving and not repeating the same mistakes. So here's some sketches and concepts from recently. Thanks for looking!

EDIT: Finished up the Merman piece.

Nice start. Really like the first monster, nice values. The bionic man looks like he has stomach muscles all the way up to the neck though. I like the enviros.

yeah what jskotte said, looking good however you need to watch your value changes on muscles... they are never so abrupt - smooth them out with a soft gradient (preferably more saturated between light and shadow to really make the colors pop) and soften them all out. You can still do this with a hard-edged brush but just remember to pick up colors with your ALT key a lot to blend smooth.

Also the face on the alien on top feels like it needs to be more convex - draw a line from the crown of his head to his jaw, you will notice it's not quite right. Liquify tool can help you fix that if you make the brush really huge.

Absolutely love the house with the rocket ship

Thanks for the comments! I will definitely work on my value changes on muscles. In general I feel like I need to push my pieces to a more finished state, or keep them much rougher. I'm in a sort of middle ground right now with some of my stuff.

I finished the Merman portrait, and hopefully fixed the perspective probs.

The rocket house is beyond adorable!
I like your work and i think it is creative. I think , though that sometimes your colours are a bit grey, perhaps you've coloured those over a grey foundation? Anyways, I 'd suggest that you lookout in an object not only for changes in value but also for changes in saturation and temperature which can be more tricky than value but which can really make a difference. All the best

pauscorpi - Thanks for the feedback! I do color over a greyscale sketch on most of my pieces, but only for the rough. I usually use straight color from there. For my studies I paint with straight color. Regardless, I will work at varying the color values and temperature across my forms.

I decided to work up the Space Cowgirl piece into a finished illustration.

Here's an hour starting sketch my piece for this week. I'd really love some critique so lay it on me. The colors are very quickly overlayed and will likely change dramatically before I'm done. I'm thinking of breaking it out of a cave and changing the setting to a stormy mountain top.

Here's a tonal study from yesterday for good measure. Going to keep doing these for sure, I learned a bunch even from just this one.

More work on this. Not sure I want to finish it or not now, too many problems with composition, perspective, pose, etc.

I think the stalagmites are really flattening the piece, especially with their linear rim light. The water source is also really leading the eye away from the action. Maybe try pushing the view down and look up towards the giant? maybe zoom in and have a more dynamic crop of the warrior being dwarfed as he attacks? I realise you've probably invested a fair bit of time in this, but I think it may benefit from a rethink
