    Default 2D - Ethnique 2010 - Dejah Thoris

Hi everybody, this is my first sketch for the competition.
The character is one of my favourite fantasy one, Dejah Thoris and I want to portray Dejah and the green Martian. I have to work a little more on the composition and refine the anatomy and the details of both the characters. I also have to add the ornaments on Dejah, since she wear nothing apart that (becasue they don't want to look like Earth's inhabitants). I also wanto to work more on the character design of the green Martian, because it's too common so far.
For the environment I palced them on Martians rocks, hope this is good for the competition terms...

Any critic/advice will be well accpeted

For the contest I would drop Carter out of the picture, and concentrate more on Thoris. It's an ethnique female themed contest after all. I would do a close up of her and really work on the jewelry. But that's my opinion. Good luck.

I have thought about that since the beginning and I'm not able to decide what to do. If I'll remove Carter it will seem a pinup piece and I don't want that, but with carter it will seem more an illustration than a tribute to e legendary female character...

Is there any other opinion from forum watchers which can help me decide what to do?

You can keep Carter if you really want but it should take a lot less space composition wise than Thoris if you do. The attention should be on her, and the way you've set up your image he takes the most of the viewers attention.

I removed Carter and continued painting Dejah.
I'm focusing on her body shapes and forms and I'll add the jewelry later. I think I'll move a little down the two planets now that Carter is not in the frame anymore, and I'll also add some spaceships or fantasy buildings in the distance.

Another update. I worked on her costume (I still need to add the shadows on the body underneath the costume) and a little on the bg. As always any advice will be helpful

What are the planets in the sky? It looks like pearls. I find it very distracting and unbalancing the composition to the upper right. In my opinion it could get in the center and look less contrasted and focus more on the women, which has some nice anatomy details and facial expression to notice.

I believe he's representing Phobos and Deimos, Mars's two moons. Although I have to say that of the two, only Phobos is even remotely spherical. Deimos is very oblong, with a smooth marble-like surface, much like you have in the picture. However, Deimos has an altogether more rough appearance, with many debris craters pocking it's surface.

Thank you all for your feedback! Here's the almost finished version but since I've just stopped to work on it I should come back again with fresh eyes. In the meantime it would be great if some of you would give me some more advices Thank you.

Here's another update. I decided to cool down the bg in order to let Deja stand out more. I like this one much more than the previous version, please let me know what you think of this.
                              Thank you.
