Default CPA #09 :: Finals & Voting: Berserk Electricity Generating Centaur

Please add a “Thanks” to the entry you like the most and feel suits the topic best. The "THANKS" button can be found at the bottom right of every post. The entry posted before the deadline and with the most thanks tallied by the time the next topic goes up, will be declared the winner for that week.
Please post your Final Image here in one post, as 1 image. You may include a Title name and description if you like below the image in text form or in text form somewhere on the image. Only post the Final image for the topic, don’t include your preliminary sketches and work in progress images unless the sketches are pertinent to your Final and are included in the Final Image you’re attaching.
Please make sure to attach your Final image with CGHUB’s attachment manager as not to produce any dead links or broken images. Once the deadline is up I'll make a post in here, and only the final images posted prior to that comment will count. Final images with votes that were posted prior to the deadline will count toward the winning entry. Please feel free to post artwork after the deadline to share what you've done with others but it will not be counted in the poll.

After the thread had been unlocked, feel free to comment, crit and talk about the work submitted. The winning Entry will be set as the image in the first post "here" to show up as the thumbnail for each week, as well as being posted in a Winners Showcase thread.

Please post any questions or concerns Here: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1939

I would prefer that you wait until after the deadline to give "Thanks" as a vote to the images you find most appealing but I can't stop you. It would just make more sense if you wait to start voting once you've seen All of the Finals for the week.

The winning Image will be re-posted/attached in the 1st post Here, to show up as the thumbnail for the thread.

Please post your Final Images ONLY.

      Good luck all

This guy stomps towards his enemies, drawing in electricity from the sky to charge his 2 blades. Before striking the final blow he rears up, framed in electricity, a terrifiying sight for his victim!

This has been a great exercise, made me push harder and everyone else's work was really inspiring!

After several months of siege, the beleaguered defenders of Psianesse grimly realized that no relief was coming from the Holy Orbital. In a desperate attempt to break through the encircling Skiidrani, the monks armed their brutish Gehnn laborers with archaic lightning cannons and threw open the gates. As the Skiidrani reeled from the unexpected assault, the monks made their peace with the death-maiden and raced into the breach.

              wow guys! incredible ideas everywhere!

@Asti: not sure what to say man only that this is an incredible piece of artwork! so original in the design and style…would've like to see it in color which i'm sure would be even more striking

@Truds: great pose, even better creature. i love the face…reminds me of the japanese tengu demon which really creeps me out

@justinhucg: very dynamic and powerful. compositionally try angling the staff that the centaur is holding on the other diagonal…this will make the staff standout more relative to the trees in the background and it also points to what the centaur is gonna strike

@Grumbleputty: love the backstory which really lends to the design of the centaur since it's used to clear out a path and if i was a foot soldier…i definitely wouldn't want to stand in the way of this charging beast

@Qikalain: great rendering man especially that face! it just makes me think twice about messing with the guy…i can't say i truly understand the form of the lower half of the body so maybe some clarification would help

well here's my final one…was gonna put some scared riflemen in the picture for scale and storytelling but got lazy and tired of the image…maybe i'll come back to put them in later but for now..i'm happy where it is and moving on…GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Gaaaah! Hope I'm not too late for the show.
Thanks for the awesome comments guys. It's great to be able to participate again.

The countryside rolled with the boom of thunder in a small village in Siberia. A sinister shadow was cast and everything erupted in flame, the bolts raining down on houses and people alike, coming from the ominous shape in the sky.

Vakrosta the summoner of lightning and death had awakened and was now unleashing its electric rage upon the village, razing everything caught in its insane eyes. Called to life by the people of the wilderness, this lone and horrible beast served one purpose, to fry everything.

Thanks BEL696 for such a kickass topic!

              Dyrá, The Galvan Harbinger

The Dyrá is the result of a a specialized botanical parasite that has bonded and fully controlled it's host. The Dyrá is incredibly aggressive and will attack any target on site. Thanks to the parasites unique ability to collect electrons from its surroundings it can discharge lethal amounts of electricity, although at the expense of the hosts body.

I'm glad so many people turned out for this activity.

              Awesome work guys! You rock!

This dude is a biomechanical fusion powered centaur who throws highly charged matter at his hopeless enemies (that one guy managed to get a good shot though..)
He's a product of some past highly advanced civilization that managed to murder itself. Now the leftover technology has attained an almost godlike position among all living creatures.

Fantastic entries everyone! I still haven't decided how I'm going to pick a favorite!

Asti: Really nicely done, and a very fresh style for this competition. The more I stare at it, the more I find great little details to admire.

Truds: Love the pose, the face and your brushwork, and you've come up with a very nice design too. If I can offer a suggestion, I think the light cast by the electrical arcs on his swords is a bit subdued- you could have really pushed that light source to increase the drama. And (this might be just my pet peeve), the warrior is so small that there's no real doubt who's going to win- the monster would still be terrifying at half the size, and it would leave some suspense about how the battle would turn out.

justinhucg: Fantastic- this is among my favorites. I really admire your brushwork, and you have just the right mix of looseness and detail. Your creature design has a great surprise element in that belly-face. Nice work! I agree with JcjLee that angling the staff might not hurt.

Ok, got to go get ready for work- I'll comment on the rest of the entries later this morning.

Grumbleputty, I def agree on the light on his arms. I might have a go later on, see how it looks Heh well I made the warrior so small as I wanted the centaur to win, but I see what ya mean, yeah, not a fair fight.

Thanks truds- I always feel awkward about giving criticism since, let's be honest, you're all much more talented than I am. It's like a kid who builds go-carts calling up Mercedes and telling them what to do!

But I won't let that stop me...

                      Qikalain:
Nice work- the face is particularly well done, and the idea of him using electric eels as a weapon is inspired! I agree with JcjLee on this one- I think one more pass through the lower body to define it a little more would take this from great to awesome.

JcjLee: I love how taking five bullets to the torso just makes him want to Rock harder! And I love your brushwork- are you working in Painter or Photoshop? The foreshortening in the animal torso isn't quite coming off though- I think he wound up looking a bit spherical down there. Still, you get so many points for the pose and the humor that it hardly matters!

Scorge: Dude, you never disappoint! You've got like half a dozen different textures on that creature- scales, leather, spines, etc.- and I'd kill to pull off ANY ONE of them as well as you did! Love the backstory too. My one quibble- the composition doesn't add anything to the power of the piece- If he were off-center a bit more, or if the viewing angle was skewed a bit, I think it would have a bit more oomph.

Bel696: incredible design- that electricity filled hollow head is a fantastic design element! You have a knack for drawing the viewer's eye through the image, with a nice balance between areas of detail and areas that become indistinct. Bravo!

Jukka: Oh for fuck's sake- that's INCREDIBLE! The lighting on the torso is fantastic, the human and non-human elements are blended very well, and the backstory is great too. This one goes into my "people whose work I'm insanely jealous of" folder...

and now, in the interest of fairness, I'll crit myself...

Grumbleputty: Your painting skills are growing a little bit with every contest, and your composition skills are slowly improving too- it's easier to talk about than to do, isn't it? Your designs are disappointing though- the design of your creature is a bit safe, and the lightning cannon was a missed opportunity to do something really unique- you basically wound up making it a tube with a handle. And the energy shields seem familiar- play Halo much?

Ok, so now I've got to figure out who to vote for- it's going to be very hard to pick a favorite this time, as I really admire every entry. Well done gang!
