Default STS 004 :: Pirate Island

PIRATE ISLAND
The legend of Ch'iao K'uo Fü Jën

Pirate Island is complete fiction. It doesn't exist.

The Setting in brief
Historical Fiction. Set off the coast of China some time around the 600 bce.

The Plot in brief
Ch'iao K'uo Fü Jën is the most feared woman and pirate of the time, ruling a naval armada of hundreds of ships and outsmarting the Imperial navy at every turn.*

*This round is a bit of a mix of the real historical figures of Ch'iao K'uo Fü Jën and Ching Yin Saou, who lived much later in the 1800's.

What you're supposed to do, in bullets.
- Action adventure on the high seas with a historical flavor.
- This is historical fiction, so keep it real, but with a touch of fantasy.
- Front Cover Only - psd template below.
- Working file can be any size you want, finals to be no wider than 1000 pixels (you can include detail shots if you want).
- Post FINAL image in FINALS THREAD (to be posted later).
- Cover design is up to the artist - you can use the template, or design your own. (Keep it the same dimensions, though).
- This is an open round - have fun, be imaginative.

Please don't keep everything secret, working on your image in private only to post it at the very last hour as a surprise. The point of sharing sketches and work in progress material is so everyone can learn from each other, receive crits, compliments and improve their skills in a classroom/workshop like environment. There are no teachers and no students per say, but try to offer help to others when possible. Please be open to receiving crits, and paint-overs or mock ups of your work, as we are all here to participate, have fun, learn, grow and enjoy what each week has to offer.

DEADLINE: 5PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME MONDAY, MARCH 1ST.

Another great topic Shane. Nice one. Should there be a template below yet, or is that in the pipeline? What do you mean, even you have to sleep sometimes?

Can always use the template from the last one, so long as we know what text elements are required.

Should bring out some wonderful contributions from the talent here.

Nickillus - You can always use the same template becasue its the correct page cover size, so if you have one single cover and double spread template your fine for any challenge, unless SCW wants to do a really odd book shape. ;p

Am I way off the mark here?

        BCE = Before Common Era?

        So 2600 years ago?

So... A legend about a person there's virtually no information about in an era 2000 years before the golden age of piracy with the title "Pirate Island". Even the imperial chinese navy came into existence 1500 years AFTER 600 BCE. In a time when sea voyage was barely beyond the ability to cross a pond?

Even if it is 600 CE (or 600 AD) it would be extremly weird because it's still so far off the mark from when pirates (around that time they would be referred to as vikings) actually existed (and the referred "imperial navy").

Seriously, sync the plot and historical facts up if it's a semi-historical assignment...

Nickillus Thanks Nickilus. Finally got the template attached. For some reason, it wasn't taking. I'd upload it, and then it wouldn't show up.

mogster Yeah, on rounds like these, it's fairly open, so you use the template from the previous round if it doesn't show up.

        Bjorn Yes, before common era.

Perhaps you didn't read the round description all the way through?

So, it's up to you. Are we taking Ch'iao K'uo Fü Jën and sending her back and forth in time? The imperial navy is after her, so that's what it sounds like. Or is it something else? It's an open round. Come up with something fun. How you interpret the historical accuracy is up to you. It's historical fiction. It's not meant to be accurate.

        Best,
        ~S

            Oooh, lovely topic, thanks!

I'll try and make time for this one since life is finally cutting me some slack after the 25th and I haven't taken a part in a challenge for a really long time...

Kyda, try lightening your image - right now it's very dark and difficult for me to read properly.

Ok, only one question - HOW historically accurate does this have to be?

I'm asking because I'm doing the research right now and apparently Chinese junk ships were developed in 220 BCE and most of the decent reference I could find for junks are from 13 century and on... Maybe I'm just searching at the wrong places?

                      EDIT

Oh, and here's a nice ref page for clothing and such if anyone's interested
