    Treasure Island
    The Hobbit
    Dune
    Neuromancer (maybe a bit less common, but my god it has so much potential)

          I'd like to go a little less "___ published ___" and list some fairy tale suggestions/references.

                This challenge sounds like fun. There are way to many books to choose from so I'll just say my current favorite:

                I highly recommend almost any of the short stories from The Fairytales of Hermann Hesse.

                Except it's a bit obscure and you really can't find much about it aside from buying the book. T_T From the amazon link thou, if you select Look Inside This Book under the thumbnail you can read a bit of the first story from First Pages.
