    Default Mirror geometry issue?

Ok, I'm having a weird issue with mirror geometry. It for some reason merges into the middle of my model..also, the manipulator is outside the model rather than inside it when I select the whole thing and yet I cant seem to find anything that tips me off to any mystery polygons floating about. Grr. anyone have any advice?

on the left is a screencap of the model with the move tool being all off and to the side, in the middle is a close up of the face head on, and on the right is the same angle after a mirror/merge, showing the way the mirror goes all wonky.

Mirror Geometry mirrors it around the center pivot. There are two ways to move the center point:

To move the center point, go to Modify -> Center Pivot. However, this will put the pivot at the average of all the center points of your object.

Since your object is halved, I would do the following. First, move it so that the border edge (the half line) is on a plane. To be really precise, you can click the border vertices and move them while holding x ("X-Move"). This snaps them to the grid, so it'll snap them to the axis. Then, press "insert" on your keyboard. This allows you to move the pivot. X-Move the pivot point to the same axis plane.

Also, if you click the box to the right of Mirror Geometry, you should pull up some options. One of these is like, "Merge object" or "group under object" or something. Uncheck that or set it to World. This will give you two separate pieces.
