Default Is it very important? Or is it a matter of personal preference?

My friend said not to worry about this too much, but I'm very curious. What are the advantages to working a painting as a whole? Why is it encouraged?

Do you mean working on a painting at the same time going from area to area? If so, it's important because it helps to keep you from getting focused too heavily in one area, helps minimize anatomical or drawing mistakes, and helps the painting achieve a cohesive quality. Now if you don't have trouble with those aspects of painting, its nothing to worry about if your style has solutions to the problem, but it's a useful method to have in mind.
