Default In a Tight Spot as a Freelancer (Concept Art/Illustration), Need Some Help

    Hey guys,

I'm in a really difficult spot right now. About a year ago, I had a portfolio that looked like this:

    davidszilagyi.daportfolio.com

And I was getting plenty of messages and offers for work, definitely enough for me to pay my loans and be alright while I was studying and learning.

Since then, I've gotten better and this is my new portfolio:

    davidszilagyi.carbonmade.com

Since posting this portfolio at the beginning of this month, and emailing every company on the North and South American continents on gamedevmap.com, I have received no real offers for wanting my work and skillset.

I know I'm still getting better and everything, but seriously, I thought at this point I might be able to tell someone "This Red/Blue Bird image took me 7 hours to produce, start to finish. I am charging $20/hr for my time," and have at least one person on the internet say "Yeah, that seems reasonable, let me give you some work."

I'm looking for the straight up honesty about my work and/or my online presentation of myself, because I know that jobs are out there, but I'm getting nothing.

tl;dr: davidszilagyi.carbonmade.com. Not getting work. I need brutal honesty and crits.

    Thanks guys!

To be honest, your old Daportfolio is better!

    Reasons-

-Wide variety of Creatures(Much Better than your current Portfolio) and beautifully presented.
-Album ARt covers are fantastic and i don't find them in your new portfolio.(WHY ARE YOU HIDING THOSE? )

    Problems with your new portfolio-

-Environments have the same feel to them( I don't say they are bad but very monotonous color schemes)
-Number of artwork is less in comparison to the old stuff.

-Wrong naming conventions and no use of Tags to direct users to find something relevant.

    for example:-
Red Blue Bird,Lion Shadow Showdown,Archer are amazing but if i have to search something with your naming convention then i will never find what i am looking for.

Like "Lion Showdown" can connect to tags like Grim Reaper, Devil, etc
"Red Blue Bird" can connect to Eagle, Hawk etc

You as a marketing student should be aware of Philip Kotler's 7p's. Use that to your benefit

I am going to be brutally honest as I think you need it. Unlike some that just keep saying great work, and wow.

Lets stop pussy footing around and be frank, you portfolio looks very amateurishness to me. The use of colour and the way you are rendering your environment and characters look off to me.

The compositions in alot of these images dont stand out, there are no real focal points, no contrasts between values. basically no couterchange in much of thse images.

This is just my opinion. Im no great artist or anything, after studying at TAD for about 8 months now under marshall vandruff, john engish and Sterling hundley. I feel as though I can spot where average paintings when I see them

        Default Portfolio

        Hey David,

You have the talent. Do some research on a company that you want to work for and build a portfolio around them. I am sure once you create a new portfolio, doors will open for you.

        Best of luck,

If you are trying to find a job, you should start smaller, maybe indie games. A good place to find some jobs are moddb.com. Im currently helping on some projects and im still an amateur.

Hi, your enviro works are amazing!! I like the look of the new portfolio better, but it isn't as user friendly as your older one.

As it turns out, this is my first post, and I cannot include links, hopefully I can immediately after I post this, but if for some reason I can't, watch this on youtube (search it):

EPISODE 20 Portfolio part3 fzd design
I think you should watch starting from part 1-2 (each parts aren't that long), I just thought that maybe you will find this more useful since he talks about physical portfolio in the first part.

            Hope that helps.

                Sorry mate,

But the standard for entry leveled paid work is much higher nowadays.

I'd reckon that you should take a few months or so to really work much harder on your skills

                -Mark

The Carbonmade portfolio seems to lack a thumbnail gallery, which I think detracts from you being able to show it all as a body of work and make it easy for an AD to hunt and peck though your images easily. Hope this is Helpful.

A couple of those posts were a bit harsh. Much of the environments could really pop with just a few color/curve adjustments. However, I did like the first portfolio better.

From a hiring standpoint, I like the work in your new portfolio better than the first. Its more polished and looks more commercial.
You should use a different gallery script and keep it consistent across the site.
You may think about adding some character sheets in there and a few pages of rough sketch ideas.

You have some great looking stuff. Good luck!!

Default Tight spot? Spot I wish more people had

Well, you have been doing business so far, which is what most people where I live haven't been able to do at all. It's a tough economy everywhere. Who knew you had to actually pay artists for artwork, right?

As an artist, I say your figure work needs some attention if you're including it in the portfolio. I think some of the critiques here were a little harsh towards the work (honestly all of cghub looks like everyone copied the same page out of a Spectrum annual).

As an employee of a commercial gallery, I say keep developing your second website, include some of the best works from the older site (they are wonderful). I would also like to see some modern design works, like signage/advert material.

User interface and search criteria will be your strongest assets, the work is fine. Jobs are hard to get anywhere right now.

Indeed, I think you are being underpaid, don't let folks take advantage of you you know?
                            Perhaps charge 25-30 instead.

                            Here's a tip,
Always make it seem as though you are charging higher than you actually want by a couple of dollars; and then haggle the price. More than likely you will be able to gain a higher rate.
