Hi andrei, really digging all the studies and practice you got here. It's awesome! Your digital works really had some supersonic improvement since your first page. Do you think that the watercolour/traditional studies you did helped you a lot? If so, I'm curious as to what aspects it helped train you in lol.

And thanks for sharing with us your panoramic photos man! I'm a huge fan of panoramic photos! Would you mind if I used them for studies as well?

Anyway awesome sketchbook man. It's always great to see how and what other artists practice and their progression as they improve!

Hi LongJh. I haven't been doing this for a long time but I can say that doing traditional drawing/painting is a must. I have been using a tablet and Photoshop for a long time making textures and doing photo manipulation so my hand coordonation is good but ever since I started doing traditional work I started feeling disconected from what I'm doing digitaly. Traditional work gets you closer to you work. It also helped me a lot with colors. Before I thought about colors like a collection of colors but after using watercolors I started seeing only different combinations of primary colors and that feels... right. It's something you think you know but you don't, not until you mix your first colors. Another huge advantage of traditional painting are the happy accidents that happen because of the amount of color and water you use, the way the brush interacts with different types of paper and so on. Going through all this traditionaly makes you see in a different way your digital work. I'm sure there are a lot more thing to say about this but you really have to try it to understand. Just try to have fun even if it feels frustrating at first... my watercolor paintings are still wors then the ones I did in first grade but the knowladge I gained doing this feels imense. I should have done this earlier
And yes, you can use my pics.

I did a few quick sketches on a trip during the weekend focusing more on perspective and composition
          (1-3min each)

... and a study in gouache of a concept art from Assassin's Creed (just the environment)
          (around 45min)

Well, maybe it's not really a study because I didn't try to make it the same way, I was just trying to capture the mood using gouache.

I recently bought a book called Composition of Outdoor Painting by Edgar Payne. I plan to read it and do studies of the examples in the book, both traditional and digital. I started with the covers.

            Front cover
            ~1h using gouache

            ~1h using Photoshop

            Back cover
            ~45 min using gouache

            ~45min using Photoshop

It's a lot of fun doing the same study traditionally and digitally. There are different advantages and disadvantages to both.

Study of a tree, the concept is not mine. I used gouache on colored paper.

I did a few more oil paintings:

                  Study after Turner

                  Study from a photo

                  Study after Peter Fiore

I'm starting to like oil a lot, although the cleaning part is annoying.

I also started drawing in gouache in a new watercolor sketchbook:

I did 3 more oil paintings recently.

Study after a photo I took last weekend while hiking.

                    Oil on canvas 24x18cm

Study after another painting done by John Wentz.

                    Oil on canvas panel 18x24cm

Dota2 logo (I'v been playing it during the last few days... maybe too much, more then painting or drawing anyway).

                    Oil on canvas panel 24x18cm
