Challengers! Hereth lie the rules for this round's challenge! Make sure to read them entirely!

"A Madman's Ramblings (Introduction)"

When I was younger, I always wondered how all the anatomy illustrations where almost identical, from head to toe. It's quite clear now that most of what differentiates ourselves from each other lies mostly on our book cover. However, who similar are we really under our skins? We'll figure it out on this challenge!

For a time I've been pondering on the suggestions some users made on the suggestion thread about doing self portraits or portraits from other cghubers and I decided, as I always tend to do, to take it a bit farther...so, for this round, we'll be doing skinless portraits! Let's get down to it!

Objectives

Challengers will be tasked to sketch a self portrait of themselves or of another willing cghuber, once the sketch is completed, the challenger will paint the muscles of their face according to the sketch they did previously as a study of face construction and the muscles of the face. As a final entry for the challenge, a rendered skinless portrait will be required along with the sketch of the same portrait before the skin was taken off.

Rules and Requirements

- Challengers are required to show their WIP and Reference Materials. These challenges are an opportunity for all of us to make contact with other artists and be a part of a growing community and it would be unfair for the artists who are making an effort to share their work and ideas if you are allowed to enter the finals without participating in the WIP thread.
- Challengers are to paint a portrait of themselves or a fellow and willing cghuber without their skin. A clear full shot of the face without its skin is required along with a sketch of the same image before its skin was taken off.

Some Tips to get you on your way...

- Don't be shy! Post the best picture you have of yourself and have some fun skinning yourself!

- Even with studies as minute and detailed as face muscles, basic figures play a big role in aiding the artist reach a fair understanding on the construction of the anatomy of a face.

- Here are a couple reference images and some links of interest:

This looks fantastically fun. I'm headed to a conference later next week, but I hope I'll be able to get work one on it this weekend! Seriously, fun topic.

Despite the massive amount of other things I need to get done before tomorrow, this just kept buzzing in my ear! So, I started a sketch. I don't have many photos of myself, nor a portable mirror, so I used a webcam - this is the shot I pretty much held the longest, ha. I think I'm tired...

Amaakir - is this what you are thinking of for a 'full face' shot? And how rendered up should the 'skin intact' portion be? I read sketch, but I just want to clarify. I will probably take it further, but I do want to get started on the muscles soon.

Im glad to see somebody participating and uploading their pictures!

I'm not sure I'll have time to do this in time, but I'll upload a picture of me in case anybody's too shy to upload a picture of themselves.
Here you have it, I warn you tho, I don't consider myself handsome XD

Did a quick color study after work, exaggerated shadows, etc.

Hope to see some others on here too!

            Default First draft

Here's my progress so far.. my portrait and the version of my portrait with some of the muscles sketched in.
I was also wondering if we should strip out hair etc in the final image. Thanks!

Cool challenge idea; I like the twist on the common self portrait.

Here's my wip. I don't have a reference photo to show because I'm working from life from a mirror, but I'll attach a photo I have on hand in case anyone wants to use it for their study.

First post! This is fun, and challenging. I hope I can finish this, but damn, it's slow going for me.

The site said I need at least one post before images so...

... Here's a breakdown of where I am right now:

1: Breakdown of the geometric form. Not perfect, and hardly economical, but it'll do.

2: Basic tonal lay in to see if I actually drew something that looks like me.

3: Removed the lines and YAY, it does.

4: Going back to the geometric line art, I use it as a proportion to build a geometric skull. Again, not perfect, but it'll get the job done.

5: Muscles are added on top of the geometric skull. This part has been the most time consuming so far, and the eyes feel off, which bothers me.

It's late, however, and going any further would just be playing in the mud, so I'm hoping tomorrow brings some new light.

                        Progress!

1 - Worked on fleshing out more muscle
2 - Adjusted levels to cheat my way into rendering
                        3 - Color overlay + Further rendering

I dont know if this has been posted before, but this is very helpful i think

                          http://www.dipaola.org/stanford/facial/class5notes.html

you can see short animations of how the muscles move, it is helping me since the self portrait im planning to do has a really weird face haha.
