Challengers! Hereth lie the rules for this round's challenge! Make sure to read them entirely!

"A Madman's Ramblings (Introduction)"

"The dog is one of the most popular pets in the world. It ordinarily remains loyal to a considerate master, and because of this the dog has been called man's best friend. Class distinctions between people have no part in a dog's life. It can be a faithful companion to either rich or poor."
Back to our Animal Anatomy studies, I decided to study upon one of human's most loyal animal companion: The dog. Either you have a dog as a pet or not, I'm sure this challenge will not only kindle your love for these admirable animals, but will also help you in understanding their anatomy and giving you a strong mental reference for any future creature concept you might wish to develop.
Without further ado, the rules for this challenge!

Objectives

Challengers will be tasked to study the anatomy of any breed of dog. For the purposes of the challenge, two illustrations will be required for the final entry, a non-rendered study of either the dog's skeletal or muscular anatomy plus a fully rendered illustration of the same dog, both images are to display it's entire body.

Rules and Requirements

- Challengers are required to show their WIP and Reference Materials. These challenges are an opportunity for all of us to make contact with other artists and be a part of a growing community and it would be unfair for the artists who are making an effort to share their work and ideas if you are allowed to enter the finals without participating in the WIP thread.
- Challengers are to study and paint either the skeletal or muscular system of a dog of their pick, fully rendering of this study is not required but sketches must accompany the final entry.
- The same breed of dog picked to do the skeletal/muscular study must be presented in a final rendered image depicting it's entire body. This will be the main entry for the finals.

Some Tips to get you on your way...

- There's a very wide variety of dog breeds, each may have their specific anatomical differences from one to another. Take your pick and do a thorough research before starting, remember that studying is always key into knowing what you are about to paint!
- If you own a dog, don't be shy and take a picture of it! Show it some love by doing a tribute to your loyal companion!
- Here are a couple reference images and some links of interest:

Are huskies acceptable? I just wanna make sure since I think they're crossbred with wolves.

Of course! All kind of breeds are acceptable as long as they're considered as dogs, dunno if that made any sense XD But yeah, since Huskies are considered dogs instead of plain wolves, they are acceptable

Hey everyone! I started my study, after countless hours debating what dog breed to use I decided to use the mutt. My mutt to be specific.

This is Elley, my pit bull and Labrador retriever mix. I have three dogs but I choose her because she has such a muscular physique, perfect for this challenge.

This is what I have so far, I decided I liked both poses so I went ahead and decided to do both. A little extra work but it's always good to do to learn.

            Default Sketches

Here's some sketches I've been doing to get a feel for the shape and anatomy of my dog. I'm doing a german shorthair.

@dierat: Great start! Siberian Huskies are such beautiful dogs
I'd really like to see you try painting your entry with it¡s mouth opened, just like in your reference

@mayanew: Glad to have you participating, mayanew! Do you have any pictures of the dogs you grew up with? It'd be awesome if you could upload the pictures, if you have them, and use them as reference

@TwoDD: Lindsey, your dog is gorgeous! I agree, her build is fit to appear on dog food commercials Excellent sketches, your work is awesome as always! Can't wait to see you take it further!

@SevnthFloorArt: Welcome back! I'm thrilled with your sketches, they all show such a powerful pose and you seem to have no problems at all at getting the shape / silhouette of the german shorthair (a great pick btw!)

Keep up the good work, guys, I'll be participating on this one myself, I'll post my WIPs soon enough!

Great posts, everyone! I love the sketches.

I love my furbaby, so I've chosen to do her. She's also a pit bull mix of some kind - so her musculature will be interesting. I've started out with a series of sketches of her in both repose and a more action, running types shots. I'll do some anatomy sketches next. Glad to participate in this one!

So, I'm using the book "An Atlas of Animal Anatomy for Artists" by W. Ellenberger that I had picked up from a thrift store forever ago. However, many of the illustrations are also on the web at high resolution, as I believe the copyright is actually over for this book. It's a great one for animals.

In any case, I did a quick sketch of the skeleton and musculature based off the dogs in that book (mine isn't nearly so... svelte). I'll be looking more closely at the photos of my pooch next.

I've started to try and lay in the skeleton in one of my dog's more active poses. I'll probably do the same thing for one in 'repose' and go from there. This is a very sketchy skeleton for when she was jumping down the hill. Figuring out the slightly unusual perspective was... interesting. I'm still not sold on any of it, especially the skull.

                  EDIT 2:YAY. Sketch success. Ta.

Okay, so I've done a more detailed skeleton sketch with just a bit of color for the jumping pose, and a rough sketch of the muscles that would be most prominent in this position. I think. Again, I'm using the Ellenberger Animal Anatomy book as my main reference.
