"Keep your views of art and what art is broad imo"

There is a point to the madness where it just has to stop. I view art based on the skills the artist has achieved and portrayed on his/her piece of work via appealing composition and knowledge.

Someone who studies anatomy, perspective, color theory (etc..) his whole life will show such experience in his work. So when someone draws a cube in the middle of the canvas and gets labeled as an artist is, personal, a ridiculous and insulting idea to me.

Default Skilled expression vs. simple self expression

The age old question... What is a art? Everybody has a "message" - something they want to say. Sometimes I have a very definite "message" for they guy that cut's me off in traffic. Or I may have a strong feeling towards certain colors and color combinations that I want to communicate or I may have a narrative I want to tell. All three of those circumstances would require that certain content be expressed but not all of them require a certain level of skill to get the point across. When you start taking about art you have to talk about form. And when I say "form" I mean medium. I think that art demands that you have some kind of mastery over the medium. which comes from a lot of time and practice. The word art literally comes from a word that means skillfully crafted.

A lot of folks are confused and want to define certain tools we use as artistic or not. I own a hammer, that doesn't make me a carpenter. Just because you own a computer with Maya or Toon Boom on it doesn't make you an animator.

Just because someone pays a gazilion dollars for a "painting" that an elephant did at the zoo doesn't make it art. If they want to spend thousands for a curio like that, it's their money. I can think of better things to spend it on.

Artists are individuals who understand how form, content, and the skillful use of the tools and materials come together to communicate the message in an engaging and entertaining fashion.

Sorry for the mini-thesis here. I have very strong thoughts on the matter. Hope this helps.

I think I could sum it up in one sentence -

To provoke some reaction or feeling or mood in the viewer.

That's art, and that's easy, since it's impossible to look at anything and not think or feel SOMETHING.
The best form of art in my view, and what most of us strive for, is to produce technically accomplished art which communicates our skill and knowledge as well as our thoughts and ideas and opinions. The best artists have always been in this category.

Hm, dunno, hitting someone in head with hammer may also produce reaction. :P j/k

          Interesting question.
I think i would define art as something, that person spends time, using various tools to achieve visually pleasing result, one way or another. And doing so with our limited sense (eyes, ears, touch...) and tools.

If you make, i don't know, a 3d model by scanning actual real world object, i wouldn't call that art. Again, because it doesn't really involve limited human senses into production. Because it's those sense that can do give something new, something fresh into the "art" you are creating.

If i stay a bit with this example, when you can that object, your limited sense doesn't really give you any input. "Nah, that head just feels wrong. Also, i think it's better if i oversize the head just a bit (for some reason). maybe change nose a bit. ).

You may or may not be correct with those changes, but it's this input from our limited senses that gives something unique to the product, and this uniqueness makes this product an art.

Because if you give same task to another artist, it will produce different results, because he's limited sense will give him different ideas how to approach the subject. And again, you will get another unique result.

While with scanning 3d modell, give it to 100 good "scanners", and they will produce very similar results".

Well, atleast that's how i see it...hope it makes sense...

I believe art is a creative expression. Which type of vehicles an artist will use to express his/her creative contribution to others defines his passion. For example, a singer sings, a dancer dances, a designer draws to express his/her creation. Ultimately, art is a creative development expressed through the filter of its creator and share to others. What do you think?

Art is a gift given by God and god give it to a special person to do something different in the word. It is not describe in the words.
