Welcome to the Creature Forge, the CGHUB 2D challenge of illustrating creatures of all shapes and sizes!

Creature #57 :: Red Footed Mountain Pumi

Deadline EXTENDED!: Monday, June 18th 2012 11:59pm [PST]

Challenge Overview:
For this round we will be fleshing out a creature that resides in a mountainous region. We have provided a detailed description of the creature. Here are the organism's details, follow them to the best of your ability:

Bioform Overview
The Red Footed Mountain Pumi is a short, stout omnivore that roams the mountains north of Nuri Plains. This creature is well adapted to roam the craggy outcroppings and dizzying heights it calls home. It is an oppourtunistic feeder that will consume anything it finds.

Bio Notes
Type: Omnivore
Habitat: Norther Nuri Mountain Range.
Social: Solitary
Temperament: Aggressive when provoked
Activity Cycle: Constant
Metabolism: Energetic
Reproductive: Viviparous - gives birth to live young

Physiological Notes
Size: Large – 36 kg
Skeletal:Endoskeleton
Epidermal: Varies - light tan to grey with deep red-brown feet.
Limbs: 4 limbs - equipped with agile feet suited for climbing.
Location of Senses: centralized on the body
Primary sense: Visual/Sight – this creature has four eyes.
Secondary sense: Smell

Other Notes:
While these creatures are mostly peaceful they can be temperamental. They are always looking for food as it can be very hard to find among the cliff sides.

Final Delivery:
We ask that you submit just one image to the finals thread that clearly shows your creature in it's natural habitat. While this description is very detailed, there is a lot you can add to the design. Have fun with it and think about what this organism would need to feel believable.

All styles are welcome! It doesn't have to be realistic to communicate effectively

Good Luck and be sure to post any questions or comments in this thread.

Sounds good, but may I ask what is meant by 'Location of senses: centralized on the body.' Does this basically mean it has a head that houses it sensory organs within a common location or that it's senses are literally 'centralized' around the center of it's body. I may be overthinking this, but I just want to clear it up.

No worries! Centralized, meaning all in one general area of the body. So the eyes, nose and whatever other senses the creature possesses will be somewhat close together. Thanks for asking!

Well, I think this is my first wip on this site, anyways this is a quick doodle of what's going through my head, thinking I should shorten the legs a tad, and maybe beef it up a bit around it's body to make it look stouter. Also thinking of adding a second one climbing over top from behind the rocks, possibly making male and female variants.

Think I'll have ago at this one,

did some side profile drawings of possible ideas, the front limps are a bit too long for the beak ones and I'll adjust that when the process goes on.

    Very nice starts you two!

rob_powell - nice work on the overall drawing! I like the proportions so far.

Canaan - very unique head designs! Great start and thanks for joining us!

Something to keep in mind for everyone: remember, this is an omnivore. This means the creature's mouth will benefit from being a generalized toolkit. Just think about what the creature would need to process the food in might come in contact with.

Also, the mountains in this challenge are not specified so you can make them what you want! Arid, snowy - your choice. This does mean that your creature will reflect the type of environment it is living in.

It's always key to try and keep as much of the environment in the creature design as possible as well as the behavior of the organism. This will determine the design in the end.

was drawing humans all day.. so i took a 15 min break to scribble something to reset my mind...

dont know where exactly i was going with the design, just focused on the gesture/attitude of the creature

      Post My Pumi Ideas

      Hello all.
      Like the work so far.
Does it have to stand on four legs? It says four limbs but wondering if I should go with a more human type body.
      Here are a few ideas.

canaan: Very interesting designs dude! I like the maned one the best, but the beaks on the others look cool as well, try experimenting with all the elements together to see how they work out

Ogi-G: Neat start, it looks a bit skinny for what they animal should be. 'short and stout' were the words used to proportions closer to a hyena or a large dog even. Shortening the legs may be enough. Remember this creature is climbing mountains regularly so it'll have a bit more muscle in it's legs as well. especially in the hind legs.

mayanew: Four limbs doesn't necessarily mean a quadruped so I guess a tetrapod walking upright could fit. You could actually play with idea quite a bit, imagine a short alien big foot! Make sure it isn't so skinny, it's a mountain dwelling creature so it will most likely be somewhat muscular so it can climb easier.

playing around with colours a bit, and added a kinda crappy environment as well.

I'm liking everyone's drawings thus far....I'll get my sketches and drawings up as soon as I figure out why my computer won't connect to the scanner.

all the best to you in your drawings, everyone.

Fused them together it's sort of looking a bit too griffon(ish) I'll keep adjusting the head and body more as I go long.

              Default My first concept.

very very very quick sketch ( 2 minutes ) just roughing out the form of the animal. second set of arms is to help maintain grip an to assist with riping apart food so it can use its other limbs to maintain footing.
the spines along its back are brightly coloured and are erected when animal is threatened. not only as a threat display but to prevent attacks from above or behind.

and advice on how to make the image full size would be wonderful. Edit by arttorney: In your posting menu, at the upper right, is a pull down menu with a little green square icon. Using that thing will place your full size image wherever the cursor is.
